HSBC Financial Literacy For Young People Project

Our HSBC (Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation) project with 25 year 6 students at Mildura South Primary School assisted them in understanding financial literacy. We facilitated a practical learning experience in which the students organised and managed a school function (disco) for their fellow students over a 6 week program. The students formed into sub committees which were responsible for specific areas of the disco; in which they had to plan and comparative shop within their allocated budget.

We believed that it was essential that the students be given their allotted money and with parental assistance, we took them shopping for both the comparative and actual purchasing of goods. It was very interesting and rewarding to watch the students put the budgeting skills that we showed them into practice whilst on the shopping expeditions.

Pre and post surveys were completed by the parents of the students and we are pleased to advise that the school’s Principal was thrilled by the overall production and are looking forward to running the program next year. Overall, it was a great experience for both the students of Mildura South and SIFE La Trobe.
