Complete an accredited La Trobe subject while attending the Albury, Bendigo or Mildura Writers Festivals or the Shepparton Festival.

As a key partner in regional communities, La Trobe is pleased to offer this exciting subject fully embedded in Writers Festivals across Victoria. Writers in Action invites La Trobe undergraduate students to engage with the Festival as writers, critics, journalists, publicists, researchers and bloggers.

Writers in Action is perfect for literary enthusiasts and those with an interest in strategic communications and the media, as well as writers at all levels. It offers a unique learning environment that provides networking opportunities with experienced authors, artists, media personalities and other major players in the writing or arts world through exclusive seminars, workshops and VIP events.​

Shepparton Festival

The Shepparton Festival is a unique blend of art, culture, food and community that balances the innovative with the mainstream. There is an emphasis on mixing community-created arts with professionally produced and performed works. In particular, the Shepparton Festival has been very successful in bringing professional artists and community groups together to develop new work.

Mildura Writers Festival

The Mildura Writers Festival is acclaimed as among the finest literary festivals in the country - a reputation earned due to its literary qualities, high calibre talent and atmosphere of conviviality. The festival brings together some of Australia's best writers in an intimate, winter program of workshops, lectures and discussion forums. Join a late night discussion around a wood fire and experience literature, local and regional gourmet food and wine.

Bendigo Writers Festival

The Bendigo Writers Festival is a premier event on the Victorian cultural calendar, attracting local and international authors across a wide range of fiction and non-fiction genres. Since 2013, the festival has hosted a changing lineup of distinguished authors, publishers, creative artists and writers of all genres. Previous presenters include: crime writer Michael Robotham, former Prime Minister Malcom Fraser, comedian Denise Scott, Booker Prize winning author Richard Flanagan and award winning memoirist Alice Pung.

Write Around the Murray

Write Around the Murray (WAM) is an annual celebration of reading, writing, illustration and storytelling. It is held in the vibrant regional city of Albury on the Murray River and is the only exclusively literary-based festival that operates in the region, with events taking place in and around the architecturally stunning and award-winning Albury LibraryMuseum and nearby venues. With its heart in regional Australia, the festival is a testament to the motivation and interest of readers, writers and artists in the area.

When: 3-5 March and 17-20 March 2017

Participants from outside Mildura, Bendigo, Shepparton or Albury will need to arrange accommodation at their own cost. The Albury Wodonga, Shepparton, Mildura and Bendigo Visitor Centres can assist with booking accommodation to suit your budget:

Transport and parking

Bendigo

By car: Bendigo is a 150 km (two-hour) drive from Melbourne along the Calder Highway. For more information, visit the City of Greater Bendigo page.

By train: V/Line trains run approximately every two hours from Melbourne and daily from Swan Hill and Echuca. The gallery is approximately 15 minutes' walk from the train station. For further information visit V/Line or phone 1800 800 007.

Parking: On and off-street parking is available in the Bendigo CBD.

Mildura

By car: Mildura is 550 km (five or six hour) drive from Melbourne along the Calder Highway. For more information, visit the Mildura Visitor Centre website.

By train and coach: V/Line runs a daily coach service, which connects to a train to Melbourne at Swan Hill. Coaches also connect to other areas of western and northern Victoria.

Albury

Shepparton

By car: Shepparton is 190 km from Melbourne on the Goulburn Valley Highway

By train and coach: V/Line runs daily between Melbourne and Shepparton.

Accreditation

  • All La Trobe students who enrol in the full subject and successfully complete and pass the assessment component will receive accreditation towards their degree.

Cost

Current La Trobe University students may take this as Commonwealth-supported elective subject. International and exchange students are invited to enrol.
