Encountering Aboriginal Victoria

This unique flexible learning subject offers students the chance to learn first hand about the knowledge and culture of Indigenous people on their traditional land, and explore Aboriginal topics that relate to Shepparton and surrounding areas.

Students also have 'on Country' experience in the Barmah Forest, in which they meet and hear representatives from the local Aboriginal community.

Encountering Aboriginal Victoria centres around a residential one-week intensive block held in Shepparton. Some of La Trobe’s leading academics in Aboriginal studies cover topics in history, sociology, anthropology and politics. Students gain an understanding of historical and contemporary Aboriginal society.

Run by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, this subject is the first of its kind. When it was introduced in 2010, it received the prestigious Wurreker Award for outstanding university programs.
