Overview

Students will work in small groups to synthesize crystals of aspirin, purify the product using the recrystallisation method and measure its MP. They will be shown how modern instruments can be used to assess the purity and identity of the aspirin crystals that they synthesize. The infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectra of this compound will be measured and the spectra discussed. This will give students an opportunity to revisit the principles of NMR, IR and MS instruments which they will have covered in Area of Study 1.

This laboratory workshop is designed to support VCE Unit 3 and complete SAC Outcome 2. A copy of a SAC report is available for teachers; this includes follow-up questions, a “Risk and Assessment Management” table and a teacher assessment guide.
