Transition to postgraduate study

We welcome new postgraduate students into our faculty. Your department will have established orientation processes, to introduce you to life at La Trobe University. Settling in to postgraduate study can be challenging. You may be new to the process of research or returning to study after a long period of time. Either way, there are many support services to assist you to settle in quickly.

The La Trobe Postgraduates Association (LUPA) runs many events and seminars which provide both social and study support, including orientation sessions and a drop-in centre on campus.

The Library runs tours and information sessions, and has on-line help resources, including information about Endnote.

Research Services provides a vast amount of information, particularly relevant to research program students.

The Language and Academic Skills Unit within the Faculty provides support in writing skills to all postgraduate students. It is important to contact them early in your writing rather than leave this support until you have already written-up your thesis or project report.

The Careers Service provides information on jobs and help with getting your resume into shape.

In general, as a postgraduate student you should be:

  • Well organised
  • Using a diary effectively (set targets and stick to them)
  • Reading critically
  • Taking responsibility for your progress and not procrastinating!

You should get to know your fellow students and make time to enjoy the experience. If things get too much along the way, there are a variety of people you can talk to:

  • Your supervisor
  • Postgraduate Coordinator
  • Your Department or School Head
  • Faculty Office staff
  • Counselling Service staff.
