Why study Mathematics and statistics?

Mathematics is logically coherent and intellectually satisfying. Studying mathematics builds powerful skills in problem solving, clear thinking and communication - skills that are highly valued by employers. Mathematics is a major building block of the information and technological age and used for analysis, forecasting and modelling. Mathematics may be studied as a major in the Bachelor of Science and many related double degrees or as part of computing, nanotechnology and engineering courses.

Demand is high for statisticians across Australia. Statistics works well in tandem with most scientific and health science disciplines (e.g. environmental science, genetics, biology) and many others such as finance. Our statistics program was the first to obtain accreditation from the Statistical Society of Australia Inc (SSAI), and is currently the only accredited undergraduate program in Victoria. Upon graduation, you are eligible for Graduate Statistician status upon joining the SSAI.

Career opportunities

Mathematics and statistics play a crucial role in many areas of science including computer science and the life sciences. Mathematics teachers are in demand. Become a mathematics teacher by combining the required minimum of mathematics in a Bachelor of Science degree with a Diploma of Education, or by doing a major in mathematics in the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Science Education double degree.

Statisticians are in demand; indeed, there is a worldwide shortage of qualified statisticians. Graduates with majors in mathematics and/or statistics are prepared for a range of careers that require quantitative skills. Find out more about becoming a professional.

Bachelor of Arts continued… Course description La Trobe's Bachelor of Arts has always been an ideal avenue for developing strong analytical and communication skills, and broad-ranging knowledge suited to careers in many fields. Through a new Work Ready stream, students can now add to the standard curriculum by doing subjects designed specifically to help prepare for the workforce. Students can also do volunteer placements or study overseas. These new subjects and opportunities make the degree one of the most flexible in Australia. In the standard curriculum, students choose to major in at least one discipline, and study it extensively each year. Students can also choose a minor specialisation to develop a secondary area of expertise. Electives are available in a huge range of disciplines, not only in the humanities and social sciences but also in areas such as accounting, computer science, economics and psychology (subject to prerequisites). La Trobe offers a highly flexible degree structure, with 14 subject areas to choose from as well as the opportunity to include subjects from other faculties as part of your degree. Because La Trobe has strong links to industry, students routinely enjoy guest lectures and work placement opportunities with leading government and research organisations as well as volunteering opportunities which will help build your CV. Students can also access a wide range of support programs within the faculty, making transition to university much less challenging. La Trobe is one of the fastest-growing science research organisations in Australia, with work currently underway on AgriBio, the centre for AgriBioscience, a $288-million public private partnership between the Victorian government and La Trobe University, and the $94-million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science at the Melbourne campus. Once completed, these Centres will expand laboratory facilities as well as teaching and research opportunities for La Trobe science students.
