Brief profile

Emeritus Professor Dyson has over 45 years’ experience in research into solar-terrestrial processes using HF radar, optical, and satellite techniques to study phenomena in the ionosphere and thermosphere. Specific research interests include the study of ionospheric irregularities, modeling ionospheric propagation, and observations of thermospheric winds using airglow and auroral emissions. Over 200 refereed scientific papers and, in 2003, received the Royal Society of Victoria’s Research Medal for Scientific Research in Physical Sciences.

I led the development of the Tasman International Geospace Environment Radar (TIGER) consortium that established the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) HF radars in Tasmania, Australia and Invercargill,  New Zealand. In addition, I have established optical instruments in Antarctica to study auroral-related phenomena and the use GPS signals received by both  ground-based receivers and space-based receiver onboard the Australian FedSat satellite to study the ionosphere and plasmasphere.
