Brief Profile
Nick Hoogenraad was trained as an agricultural scientist in the mid 1960s after which he completed a PhD in Biochemistry in 1969. He commenced his life long interests in medical research when he joined the Pediatric department at Stanford in 1970.
Over his long career in science Nick Hoogenraad's work has focussed on mitochondrial biogenesis and on the role of molecular chaperones in protein targeting and folding in mammalian cells. He has also been active in translational research as part of the Cooperative Research Centres for Diagnostic Technologies, the CRC for Diagnostics and recently led a team which was awarded $30.7 million for the CRC for Biomarker Translation (2007). This research is directed to producing Diagnostic and Therapeutic antibodies for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune disease. He has won many major awards for his research (including the Lemberg Medal of the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2004); Leach Protein Chemistry Medal (1997); AMRAD/Pharmacia Biotechnology Medal (1994)) and has served on numerous committees including President of ASBMB (1996-1999); ARC Biological Sciences Panel(1991-1994); NHMRC Biochemistry Panel(2004-2007); ANZ Trustees( 2000-2007).
In his spare time Nick and his family runs a vineyard in the Diamond Valley which produces award winning Pinot Noir.
