Brief Profile

Dr Hill has held Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Lund, Sweden (1967), the University of Louisville, USA (1968) and Brigham Young University, USA (1969). He was appointed a Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia in 1970. He was subsequently promoted to Lecturer (1973), Senior Lecturer (1980) and Reader/Associate Professor (1990). He was invited to the National University of Singapore as a Senior Teaching Fellow (1990 - 1994). He was Head of the Department of Environmental Management & Ecology, La Trobe University, Albury-Wodonga Campus from 1997 - 2000. He was subsequently appointed Professor, Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of the Albury-Wodonga campus of La Trobe University from mid 2000, a position which he held until his retirement in 2006. He was conferred upon him the title of Emeritus Professor in 2007.

His major research interest has been in Thermochemistry and over a period of 35 years he has applied a variety of calorimetric and thermal analysis techniques to study a diverse range of chemical and biochemical systems with special emphasis on the application of these techniques to coordination compounds and systems of biological and evnironemntal significance. He has been a member of the International Confederation of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry since 1975 and has a long-standing association with the Centre for Thermal Studies, University of Huddersfield, UK. His other major research interests are in environmental chemistry, inclduing fresh and marine water quality, environmental trace metal analysis and marine aquatic chemistry. In this connection, he has developed an ongoing assocaition with the Borneo Marine Research Institute, University of Malaysia Sabah on the importance of water quality in aquaculture. His recent Chemical Education PhD project involved a comprehensive review of the Year 1 Chemistry program in Australian universities with the aim of designing a new curriculum framework for this course. He is currently extending this project to the design and development of further chemistry curriculum frameworks, especially for environmental chemistry courses. He also has a major interest in the 'future of chemistry' and in the role of chemistry in 'sustainable science', with particular focus on the role of chemistry in natural resource sustainability. He has more than 180 research publications, including several book chapters and major review articles. He has been an invited presenter at numerous national and international chemical, environmental science and, more recently, chemical education conferences and he has conducted symposia on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry techniques in SE Asia (1980's). He is an internationally recognised authority in the thermal sciences and in mid 2001 he was appointed an honorary visiting Research Professor at the University of Huddersfield, UK in recognition of his major contributions to this field and his long association with the Centre for Thermal Studies of that University.

Teaching

I have in excess of 30 years of academic teaching experience at all four levels of the traditional undergraduate BSc degree. Most of this experience has been in the discipline of chemistry but in recent years, this has broadened to include environmental science. Most of my teaching in chemistry relates to courses in inorganic and analytical chemistry with specialization in thermodynamics and thermoanalytical chemistry. I have 33 years of continuous teaching experience in the Chemistry 1 course together with teaching of the associated tutorial and laboratory sessions. I have given Honours level lectures in my specialist area and also in non-specialist areas such as advanced spectroscopy over the period 1970 - 1990. My teaching experience was significantly intensified by a four-year term at the National University of Singapore (1990 - 1994) and in 1992, I was awarded the NUS Faculty of Science Teaching Award in Chemistry based on student assessment of Chemistry 1 lecturers. Over the decade 1994 - 2004 at the Albury-Wodonga Campus of La Trobe University, I have continuously been involved in teaching Chemistry 1 and the Year 2 Environmental Pollution & Control course. I have also continuously been involved in assessment of all Honours theses submitted in the Department of Environmental Management and Ecology. Over many years, since student assessment of courses and lecturers was introduced, I have consistently been favourably assessed as a teacher of chemistry and more recently, of environmental science. My teaching is fundamentally 'student focused' and provides continuous opportunities for interactive learning.

Over the two decades 1970 - 1990, I conducted several postgraduate courses in thermoanalytical chemistry at overseas institutions, specifically in USA, Canada, UK, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. These were by invitation and were usually sponsored by Universities and thermal analysis instrument companies.

I have been involved continuously over three decades with curriculum development and the academic accreditation process. I have attempted to use new teaching methodologies as these became available, particularly those methodologies using information technology. I am acutely aware of the continuous need for quality assurance of courses and for continuous review of course structures, assessment and presentation. I have been a member of Review Panels related to comprehensive reviews of Chemistry Departments in Australian Universities and making recommendations for academic enhancement.

In recent years, I have made presentations at national and international Chemical Education Conferences which focus on the effective teaching and learning of chemistry and I am undertaking a research project on the reform and restructure of the Chemistry 1 course in Australian Universities. This involved an extensive review of Chemistry 1 courses in 20 Australian Universities in 1999 and an extensive series of interviews with Heads of Chemistry Departments. Hence, chemical education has become a major focus of my present research interests which has informed me of developments in chemistry teaching and learning paradigms in both secondary schools and Universities.

Research

I have been involved continuously with academic research for almost 40 years mainly in the area of thermoanalytical chemistry, but more recently in environmental chemistry. My research in thermochemistry, synthetic chemistry and analytical chemistry over the period 1966 - 1996 has been summarised in separate review papers which are included in the CV Appendix. Over the period 1970 - 1990, I supervised (to completion) 22 students for higher degrees and I have in excess of 170 research publications (Full list given in CV Appendix). I have a very well-established international research reputation, which has been endorsed by the award of the Higher Doctorate - DSc from the University of London in 1992. My many and diverse research programs including the present chemical education project, have been supported by internal and external funding agencies to the extent of some $150,000. I have collaborated with researchers in the USA, Canada, UK, Singapore, India and Thailand.

In recent years, my research interests have related to environmental chemistry and chemical education. In particular, I have developed a collaboration with the Centre for Thermal Studies at the University of Huddersfield, UK and over the period 2001 - 2003, I was involved with the development and assessment of a new thermal analysis technique - Sample Controlled Thermogravimetric Analysis (SCTG) as applied to the study of 'large samples' up to 1000mg. I have also developed a collaboration with the Borneo Marine Research Institute of the University Malaysia-Sabah concerned with marine aquatic chemistry and specifically, the modeling of trace metals in seawater. Both of these collaborations are on-going.

I have continuously been an examiner for national and international PhD theses. I am an accredited assessor for DSc theses submitted to the University of London. I have been a member of the editorial board of Thermochimica Acta for some 20 years and in this capacity, I continue to referee papers submitted to this international thermal sciences journal. I am a long-time member of the International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ICTAC) and I have been a member of the Council of that organization for a term of four years. I have also been an assessor for many research grant applications.

Recent research achievements include the acceptance of 5 papers on thermal analysis submitted to the Encyclopedia of Analytical Science (2nd Edition) (Elsevier) to be published in 2005 and several papers in chemical education most notably publications 165 and 172. My thesis on 'Reform of the Chemistry 1 course' is expected to be submitted to the University of Melbourne at the end of 2004.

Administration

Over my long career, I have been involved in a wide variety of administration duties, initially at the Departmental level, then at Faculty level and more recently, at University level. I have at various times in my early career been a member of La Trobe University Council and Academic Board. I have held Chair appointments of the University Occupational Health & Safety Committee and the Residential Colleges Committee. I have been a member of the Library Committee, the Honorary Degrees Committee, the Teaching Skills Committee and the Staff Association Executive. At the Departmental level, I have considerable experience as a course coordinator, Honours and Postgraduate Coordinator, research seminar coordinator and OH&S advisor. As a Departmental Head, I have considerable experience as a financial and human resource manager and staff supervisor. I have assessed numerous applications for promotion particularly to Level D (Associate Professor) and Level E (Professor). I have also assessed overseas applications for promotion to Professor.

During 1996, I was appointed (without interview) as Acting Head of the Albury-Wodonga Campus of La Trobe University. This position demanded a wide variety of academic and administrative management skills. The greatest challenges demanded advanced negotiating and interpersonal skills. Any success achieved was the result of being able to communicate with all groups on campus, academics, library staff, administrative staff, support services staff and especially, students. It was also essential to develop a community outreach strategy with the local community and to promote the University in the region.

In mid-2000, I was invited to become the Director and Head of the Albury-Wodonga campus of La Trobe University and also appointed as a Professor of the University. This demanding position involves management of a total staff compliment in excess of 70 and a student compliment in excess of 1100. The academic programs of the campus are spread across the 5 Faculty units and include a wide variety of degree and diploma courses. The Director of Campus is expected to promote the University within the region and to develop academic and cultural links across the extensive regional campus network of the University. In early 2004 I was appointed as Pro Vice Chancellor and Head (Albury-Wodonga).
