Brief profile
Dr Agbinya is Associate Professor in telecommunication and also holds an Adjunct Professor position in computer science at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. He comes from a practice-based research background through CSIRO Telecommunications and Industrial Physics where he was a Senior Research Scientist combining research and software and hardware implementation in biometrics and remote sensing.
Dr Agbinya was also Principal Engineer Research at Vodafone Australia. He managed Vodafone's R&D projects in mobile and wireless communications networks and multimedia in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji with interface to Vodafone Group Research.
He has published widely in broadband wireless communications, vehicular networks, video and speech compression and coding, contributing to the development of Voice over IP at CSIRO and Ericsson's multimedia platform and Dillithium data transcoding for 3G at Vodafone Australia. He co-designed and developed the first cut and requirements for Vodafone Australia 3G network. He is co-author of the book Internet Technology in a Nutshell and an up and coming text in Next Generation Broadband Networks and IP Communications (by Taylor and Francis, to be soon released). He is also a co-editor of the Auswireless 2006 and 2007 conference proceedings. He also has published key highly ranked papers in IEEE Journals in use as basis for interpolation and tracking in video.
Dr Agbinya has also served in the editorial boards of several Journals and the Editor-in-chief of the African Journal of Information and Communication Technology (published by the UTS ePress). He is ranked as an established researcher by the South African Research Fund (NRF) and also reviews its research grant applications. He has also reviewed venture capital funding applications for Deutsche Bank. He was a recipient of the best paper award in the IEEE 5th International Conference on Networking, ICN'06 in 2006.
Dr Agbinya has served in several advisory and management boards including the ATCRC Executive Board and the Nigerian National ICT Policy initiative and the Telkom Centre of Excellence in IP Computing at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa.
