Brief profile

After graduating in Zoology at the University of Leeds (UK) in 1959 he completed a DIC at Imperial College, University of London in 1960. This was followed by an appointment as Assistant Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Hong Kong. Whilst in this appointment he undertook his PhD research in Insect Physiology as a Postgraduate British Commonwealth Scholar at CSIRO Division of Entomology, Canberra from 1962 – 1963 and was awarded a PhD from the University of Hong Kong in 1965. He was appointed Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong in 1964 and seconded to the University of Hull, UK, as Lecturer in 1967.

In 1969 he was appointed Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University and subsequently Reader and Associate Professor in 1973. The University of Leeds awarded him a DSc in 1979 for research in Insect Physiology and Ultrastructure. From 1991 to 1994 he was Head of the Department of Zoology. In addition to establishing a well equipped laboratory for Analytical Electron Microscopy in the Department of Zoology, he was instrumental in obtaining an ARC Infrastructure and Equipment Grant in 1996 for $900,000 to set up an advanced electron microscopy facility at La Trobe University jointly with the University of Melbourne.

In 1998 he was Visiting Professor, Department of Cell Biology, Duke University and from 1999 to 2001 he was Visiting Professor in Biology, Shanghai Medical University. Currently he is an Emeritus Scholar at La Trobe University and an Honorary Fellow at CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratories.

Research interests:

  • Electron immunocytochemistry and x-ray microanalysis
  • Physiology of coral reef organisms
  • Insect Ultrastructure and Physiology, particularly relating to ion and water regulation
  • Development of techniques and methods of Analytical Electron Microscopy for application to biological research
