Albury-Wodonga Prize for Academic Achievement

Awarded to Bachelor of Arts students who have completed their first year (120 credit points) of studies. Awarded on the basis of grades and participation in academic activities.

Alice and Isabel Watson Essay Prize

The Victorian Women’s Trust (VWT) and the Gender, Sexuality and Diversity Studies (GSDS) Program, La Trobe University have created a partnership to enable an Essay Prize, awarded annually to an undergraduate student, majoring in GSDS, for an outstanding essay.

Amy Huxtable Memorial History Prize

Awarded to a Bendigo Arts student for an outstanding historically-oriented research project undertaken by a final-year student in the Bachelor of Arts.

Art History Alumni First Year Prize

Awarded annually to the student with the highest academic results at first year level in Art History.

Awarded to the student with the highest academics results at third year level in Art History.

Bendigo Campus Arts Staff Award

This award to made each year to a student who has successfully completed the third year of the Bachelor of Arts course at the Bendigo or Shepparton Campus. It is based on academic merit.

Celtic Club Essay Prize

Awarded to the best undergraduate essay in a subject related to the history of Ireland.

City of Greater Shepparton Prize – Bachelor of Arts

Awarded to a full-time first year enrolling student entering the Bachelor of Arts with the highest Enter score.

Dante Alighieri Society President’s Prize

Awarded to the first-year student with the highest mark in either ITA1ADB (Advanced Italian 1B) or ITA1BEB (Beginners Italian 1B). The winner must be continuing Italian Studies at a higher year level.

David Hume First-Year Philosophy Prize

Awarded each year to the student who is placed first among all students enrolled in a first-year philosophy subject, provided the work is of A-level standard. The prize will be shared in the case of A-level students placed equal first.

David Hume Honours Year Philosophy Prize

Awarded each year to the student placed first (or shared between students placed equal first) among eligible students completing their fourth year (honours) in philosophy, provided the student (or students) is (are) awarded a first-class honours for that year. Eligible students are those who take no more than one course component (out of three) from outside those offered as fourth-year philosophy subjects.

David Johanson Prize

Established in memory of David Johanson who taught history from 1968 to 1985. It is usually awarded for the best third-year essay in any history subject, but occasionally it is awarded to another year level.

Dean’s Merit Prize – First Year

Awarded to the most outstanding first year undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Arts.

Dean’s Merit Prize – Second Year

Awarded to the most outstanding second year undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Arts.

Dean’s Merit Prize – Third Year

Awarded to the most outstanding third year undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Arts.

Dennis O’Hoy Ceramic Award

Awarded annually to a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Ceramics) student who has revealed an innovative approach towards design concepts in their major study and is continuing their studies in the undergraduate program at the Bendigo campus.

Derick Marsh Shakespeare Prize

Awarded annually for the best essay written by an undergraduate student in English on a topic concerned with an aspect of Shakespeare’s work.

First Year Anthropology Prize

Awarded to the student with the highest mark across the two subjects (ANT1CAG and ANT1FET) in one year.

First-Year History Prize

Normally awarded to the student with the best result(s) in first-year history (excluding American History), provided that the achievement is meritorious.

First-Year Sociology Prize

Awarded annually to the student with the highest final mark in a first-year sociology subject.

Geoffrey John Blunden Prize in Philosophy

Awarded annually for the best essay by an undergraduate student on a topic concerned with the welfare of non-human animals.

Godden Mackay Logan Prize

Awarded for the best essay in a heritage subject in Archaeology.

Henry Martell - DK Agencies Essay Prize

Awarded annually for the best essay on any topic relating to the Indian subcontinent by an undergraduate in any subject.

Holding Redlich Law/Politics Prize

Awarded annually to the student in third year with best overall result for law and politics subjects combined, and who has completed one of the politics honours prerequisite subjects.

Hugo Wolfsohn Memorial Prize

This is awarded annually to the student with the most distinguished record in a first-year politics subject.

Jean Martin Prize in Sociology

Awarded annually to the student submitting the best fourth-year honours thesis based on an empirical study of Australian society, where there is a thesis of sufficient merit.

Jose Maria Sangiau Prize

Awarded to contribute towards travel to a Spanish speaking country based on a short essay in Spanish outlining the perceived value of studying abroad in a recognised course of study on exchange or in-country study.

Kylie Morrow Memorial Award

Awarded annually to most outstanding full-time Bachelor of Arts student at the Bendigo Campus who has successfully completed all subjects in the first year of the course and is proceeding into the second year of the course.

Lia Teresa Memorial Prize

Awarded to the most outstanding second-year student in the Bachelor of Visual Arts course at the Bendigo campus.

Liliane Gay – Alliance Française Prize

Donated by Alliance Française of Victoria, the prize is awarded to the student who has obtained a pass at A level in one of the subjects taught in the French Program. The prize is awarded to the student who, in the opinion of the staff of the French Program, has done the most meritorious work in French studies. The prize may be shared equally between two or more students. Native speakers of French are not eligible for the prize.

Lilit Thwaites Prize

Awarded to the best second year beginner Spanish student over two consecutive semesters. The Lilit Twaites Prize is supported by John Ford and Peter Gerrand. John is a proud Spanish speaker and has a deep interest in the historical and cultural aspects of the country, the Iberian Peninsula and its region. Peter Gerrand is an Honorary Associate in the Spanish Program at La Trobe University.

Lorraine Donnan Prize

Awarded annually to the student with the highest mark in a social theory subject at second-year level.

Mason Family Trust Arts Bursary

This bursary was established from a donation by the Mason Family Trust of which Sandhurst Trustees Limited is the trustee. The bursary is awarded to assist students enrolled at the Bendigo campus in Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences or Education who are pursuing studies in Arts and Communications, Visual Arts and Design, Art Education, Music Education or Performing Arts Education, and who incur substantive costs for equipment and have demonstrated academic and/or practical merit.

Mason Family Trust Arts Excellence Award

This award was established from a donation by the Mason Family Trust of which Sandhurst Trustees Limited is the trustee. The award is established to assist full time final year undergraduate or postgraduate students enrolled at the Bendigo campus in Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences or Education who are pursuing studies in Arts and Communications, Visual Arts and Design, Art Education, Music Education or Performing Arts Education and is based on demonstrated academic excellence.

Mason Family Trust Travel Scholarship

This scholarship was established from a donation by the Mason Family Trust. The scholarship is awarded to full time final year undergraduate or postgraduate students enrolled at the Bendigo campus in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences or Education who are pursuing studies in Arts and Communications, Visual Arts and Design, Art Education, Music Education or Performing Education, to assist with course related travel expenses

Meridian Prize

Awarded annually by Meridian: The La Trobe University English Review and the English Program for the best fourth-year long essay submitted by a completing honours student in English.

Miguel Valiente Prize

The Miguel Valiente Prise is awarded to the best third year student essay or initiative in promoting Spanish culture. Miguel Valiente was a principal tutor in Spanish at La Trobe from 1973-1978 and he is remembered warmly for creating a Student Spanish Theatre Group – El Tragaluz. Miguel was also a guest commentator on Spanish radio and actor with the Spanish National Radio Drama Company and a regular contributor to Australia’s SBS radio. The Miguel Valiente Prize is generously funded by Spanish Program Honorary Associate, Peter Gerrand.

National Gallery of Victoria Trustees Award

Awarded annually to two students in visual arts courses who have successfully completed the first year of their course. The award is based on highest artistic/academic merit.

National Trust (Bendigo Branch) Award

The Central Victorian Branch of the National Trust of Australia presents a prize annually for a research thesis of outstanding quality that contributes to an understanding of Victoria’s heritage, undertaken by a student successfully completing a bachelor of Arts Honours or a graduate Diploma in Arts (History) at the Bendigo Campus.

Orde Award

Available to eligible 2nd year students in the Bachelor of Visual Arts or Bachelor of Graphic Design. Please see the regulations for further details.

Panalpina World Transport Consul – General of Switzerland Prize

Awarded to the first-year student who achieves excellent or high distinction in two of the Swiss languages (French and Italian).

Parsons Brinckerhoff Prize

Awarded to the outstanding student graduating from the Bachelor of Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning Course, based on the student’s academic work over the four years if the course.

Peter Cook Prize in Australian History

Established to commemorate the outstanding teaching of the late Dr Peter Cook, the prize is awarded annually for the best first-class honours thesis in Australian history. If there is no such thesis, the prize will be awarded for the best first-class honours thesis in the History Program.

Politics and International Relations Essay Prize

Awarded annually for the essay judged to be the best submitted by an undergraduate student in a second or third-year politics subject.

R Robert Clark Memorial Award

Awarded annually to the most outstanding second year student undertaking the Bachelor of Arts full time at the Bendigo Campus.

R. W. (Wally) Thompson Prize

Awarded annually to the student enrolled in any introductory/beginners language subject within the Spanish Program, who achieves the highest average mark over the two semesters of the introductory year.

Rene Descartes Prize

Awarded each year to the student enrolled in second-year philosophy who has completed at least two subjects in the same year at an A-level standard and who has the best results.

Richard and Claire Guy Regional Planning Bursary

Awarded to a fulltime student enrolled in the second year of the Bachelor of Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning course. Applicants must have a permanent postcode in regional Victoria. They must have completed the first year of the course, preferably obtaining an average grade across all first year subjects of at least 70% and be able to demonstrate how the bursary will be used to support their ongoing academic progress and that their individual circumstances warrant financial support.

Robin Jeffrey Politics Honours Prize

Awarded to the student with the best final result in either Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Politics or Bachelor of International Relations Honours Program.

Royal Historical Society of Victoria Prize

This provides a certificate and a three-year subscription to the Royal Historical Society of Victoria to the third-year student with the highest mark in Australian history.

Second-year Australian History Prize

Awarded to the student with the highest mark in a second-year Australian history subject.

Second/Third Year American History Prize

Normally awarded to the student with the best result in second/third-year Subjected States history subject, provided that a result of sufficient merit is achieved.

The Australian Literature Prize

Awarded to the student who has written the best essay or long essay on Australian Literature.

The English First Year Prize

Awarded to the student who has the highest aggregate result in two first year English subjects taken in one year.

The English Honours Year

Awarded to the student who has completed fourth year hours in English with the highest mark.

The Jane Austen Prize

Awarded to the student who has written the best essay or long essay on Jane Austen’s novels.

The Professor George Russell Memorial Award

Awarded to a student enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts at the Mildura campus who has elected English as their major, completed second year of the course achieving the highest grade point average in their English Subjects, and has a confirmed enrolment to study in the third year of the bachelor of Arts.

Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry Exhibition Prize

The exhibition prize may be awarded to the most outstanding honours student in the Politics program on completion of the final examination, to an outstanding honours student in the third year of the course, or it may be shared between two equally outstanding students in either the third or final year of their studies.

Wirrianda Philosophy Prize

Awarded annually to a female student enrolled at fourth-year level in honours philosophy (or joint honours philosophy) who has completed her Bachelor of Arts at La Trobe in the prior year and has, of the female students so qualifying, the best results in third-year philosophy subjects.
