How do I apply for a La Trobe University Scholarship? |
Applications for La Trobe University Equity Scholarships (LSSS, LISS, LVCRS, LVCWS and McGMS) and Commonwealth Indigenous Scholarships will open on 3 August, 2009 and close on 30 October 2009. You will need to apply online through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) (www.vtac.edu.au) by 5pm, 30 October, 2009. No late applications will be accepted. Scholarships offered through Faculties, Campuses or Colleges have different application processes and opening and closing dates. You will need to check the process for each individual scholarship with the respective Faculty/Campus or College. |
Does my VCE ENTER or university grades count when my application is assessed for a La Trobe University Scholarship? |
Most of these scholarships, except the LAES & HYG, do not use school or university academic results as part of the assessment process. The main criteria (except for LAES & HYG) are financial and educational disadvantage. If you are offered and accept a scholarship, satisfactory academic progress is important to keep receiving the scholarship. You should check elsewhere on the La Trobe scholarships page for scholarships available through Faculties, Colleges and Campuses. |
How is my application assessed for the La Trobe Scholarships? |
All applications (except the Academic Excellence scholarship) are scored using the information you provide about low income, financial or educational disadvantage, caring for others, non English speaking background, disability, or other hardship or disadvantage that may impact on you being able to study at university. |
If I have a really good reason why my scholarship application is submitted late, will you accept it, and what should I do? |
Late applications will NOT be accepted for any scholarships applied for through VTAC. Other scholarships available through Faculties, Colleges or Campuses have difference application processes and opening and closing dates. Please refer to the relevant Faculty/College/Campus webpage for further information. |
Can I apply for a La Trobe University scholarship in mid year if I cannot get my application in on time? |
There is no mid year scholarship application process in relation to the La Trobe University Equity or Commonwealth Indigenous Scholarships. |
What if I do not have all the information that is required or cannot answer all the questions on the application form? |
Incomplete applications will be disadvantaged in the assessment process, as they may receive fewer points when they are scored. If the required documentation is not attached, the application cannot be fully considered. |

When will I know if I have been successful or not? |
VTAC will send provisional scholarship offer letters to all successful La Trobe University applicants in mid-late December, 2009. If you do not receive an offer of a scholarship from La Trobe University at that time, your application has, at that stage, not been successful, but will be considered in subsequent scholarship offer rounds in 2010. A 2nd round of scholarship offers will be made in early March 2010. |

If I have a TAFE qualification am I still eligible for a scholarship for “commencing” students? |
Yes. A TAFE course does not count as tertiary studies when we determine eligibility for a scholarship for commencing students. |
If I completed a graduate diploma a long time ago and am going to enrol in a new Bachelor degree can I apply for any of these scholarships? |
No. If you already have a bachelor degree or a higher award such as a graduate diploma, you are not usually eligible. These scholarships are intended to assist people at the beginning of their tertiary education. |
Which scholarships can I apply for if I am in year 2 or 3 of my course? |
There are no University-Wide Equity Scholarships available in year 2 or 3 of your study; however, we recommend you seek advice from Centrelink if you are eligible for the Start-up and/or Relocation Scholarship. |
If I have just finished my BA (or other Bachelor degree) and am enrolling in a Grad Dip in Education (or other field), can I still apply for one of these scholarships? |
All the La Trobe scholarships listed are for undergraduate students only. A graduate diploma is a postgraduate course. However, if you have completed a bachelor degree and plan to do Honours, you may apply for an Honours Year Grant (HYG). You should check elsewhere on the La Trobe scholarships page for scholarships available to postgraduate students. |
If I am not successful in getting a La Trobe University Equity scholarship this year can I apply again next year? |
No, as the Latrobe University Wide Equity Scholarships are only available to commencing students. |
Questions |
Answers |
If I am successful in my scholarship application and subsequently defer my course for a year, can I still receive the scholarship when I commence university study? |
No. If you cannot accept the scholarship and enrol immediately for that semester, you will have to decline the scholarship. If you have already accepted the scholarship, the University will withdraw the scholarship offer if you defer your course. In these instances, you would need to reapply in the following year, if you are still eligible. |
Questions |
Answers |
Do I have to tell Centrelink about my La Trobe University scholarship, and will my scholarship affect my Centrelink benefits? |
Yes, you must advise Centrelink if you have a La Trobe scholarship, or an Honours Year Grant, as your Centrelink benefit may be affected. You must obtain advice from Centrelink. |
Do I have to be on a Centrelink benefit in order to receive a scholarship? |
Not necessarily. Some people who are not eligible for a benefit may still be eligible for a scholarship. |
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PART-TIME STUDENTS
Questions |
Answers |
Can I accept a scholarship offer and enrol part-time? |
Only in exceptional circumstances will part-time enrolment be approved for most scholarships (except LISS and HYG). If you are offered a scholarship, and enrol part-time, or change to part-time after you have accepted the scholarship, the Scholarships Unit will ask you to explain the "exceptional circumstances" that mean you cannot study full-time. The relevant university Committee will decide if you can be offered or keep a scholarship as a part-time student. |
Can I change to part-time after I have started my course, and keep my scholarship, and what do I have to do? |
Only in exceptional circumstances and with special approval (except for LISS and HYG). Check the general ongoing eligibility criteria and conditions for details, and ask for advice from the Scholarships Unit staff. |
If I do get approval to be part-time what happens to my scholarship payments and how long does the scholarship continue? |
If you have a La Trobe scholarship, you will be paid at 50% of the full-time rate. This means that you would receive the same total amount of money over a longer period of time, equivalent to the usual full-time duration of your course. |
TRANSFERRING A COURSE OR CAMPUS, OR FROM ANOTHER UNIVERSITY
Questions |
Answers |
Can I transfer to another course at La Trobe and keep my scholarship? |
Yes, but only with formal approval from the Scholarships Unit. Generally you are expected to remain in the course in which you are first enrolled. If you have an LAES you may receive approval to change course and keep the scholarship, but you must remain enrolled in the same Faculty. |
Can I transfer to another La Trobe campus and keep my scholarship? |
This depends on which scholarship you have. If you have a LVCRS or LVCWS there are restrictions on changing campus. For all scholarships you must request formal approval from the Scholarships Unit to change campus and keep the scholarship, before you change campus. |
If I am enrolled in a course where I can only do one or two years at a regional campus then I have to transfer to Bundoora to complete my course, what happens to my scholarship? |
Usually your scholarship will continue if you have to change campus because of the structure of your course. Check with the Scholarships Unit if you are unsure. |
If I transfer to another university can I keep my La Trobe University scholarship? |
No. The La Trobe scholarships cannot be transferred to another university. |
IF YOU FAIL OR DROP A UNIT OR DO NOT RE-ENROL
Questions |
Answers |
If I fail one or more units, what happens to my scholarship? |
You must advise the Scholarships Unit when requested each semester. You will be advised about any impact this may have on your continued eligibility for the scholarship. |
I want to drop a unit during the semester what happens to my scholarship? |
You must advise the Scholarships Unit if you plan to drop a unit. If your study load is still considered full-time for that semester, i.e. more than 75% of a full-time study load, the scholarship will usually continue, but still for the original number of years. |
If I get sick and my doctor advises me to do 3 units a semester instead of 4, so I take longer to finish the course, can I keep my scholarship? |
If you are still enrolled for at least 75% of a full-time load, your scholarship can continue at the full-time rate, still for the same number of years. That means you would probably have to finish some units after the scholarship has ended. If your study-load drops to part-time you would have to apply to the Scholarships Unit for approval to continue with the scholarship part-time. |
If I fail 2 or 3 units in one semester, but I am allowed to re-enrol and repeat them, can I keep my scholarship? |
One of the ongoing requirements is that you have to make satisfactory academic progress. In this case you should advise the Scholarships Unit of the circumstances, and the relevant Committee will advise if you can keep the scholarship or not. |
If I had a scholarship last year, and did not re-enrol or intermit this year, can I get my scholarship back if I am allowed to enrol again in my course? |
As you would not have met the ongoing terms and conditions of your scholarship, it may already have been terminated. You should ask the Scholarships Unit for advice. |
AFTER THE SCHOLARSHIP HAS BEEN AWARDED
Questions |
Answers |
If I decide to do Honours and am accepted, will my La Trobe University scholarship continue? |
If you have a La Trobe scholarship, and you have not exceeded the normal duration of the course. You can also apply for an Honours Year Grant. |
What happens if I only have two units left to finish my course in the last semester? |
If you have already been paid a scholarship for the maximum number of years the scholarship would be finished. If you have time left on your scholarship, and have a part-time study load in your final semester of study (and there is no option to study full-time due to the number of credit points required for completion of the degree), formal approval to study part-time and retain the scholarship is not required. |
If I am accepted for a student exchange overseas, can I keep my scholarship? |
Yes. The same conditions for La Trobe scholarships when you are still enrolled at La Trobe, but studying overseas for one or two semesters. Make sure the University has a current postal address and other contact details for you, or advise the Scholarships Unit if someone at home can legally act on your behalf. |
Questions |
Answers |
Why do I have to wait until the middle of April or September after semester has started to receive my La Trobe University scholarship payment? |
The University can only pay you after the main semester 1 and 2 census dates in each year (i.e. once you have a confirmed enrolment in each semester). As there approximately 2000 payments to check and process each semester, this takes some time. Our goal is to have your money in the bank by the middle of April and September if possible. |
What if I really need money before then? |
You may apply for a student loan. Information about who to contact for each campus is available at www.latrobe.edu.au/acadserv/finaid You should advise the Loans Officer that you have a scholarship, how much you will be paid and when. Your scholarship income may be taken into account when your loan application is assessed. Apply for a student loan as early as possible as it may take 2 - 4 weeks to be approved. |
