Frequently Asked Questions

I have never been to the La Trobe pool, what is it like?

Our pool is an indoor 25m heated pool. It is 0.9m at each end and gradually slopes deeper to 2.0m. We also have a deep water pit that is 2.5m deep.

There is a Tarzan rope that swings into the deep water pit and we also have a cargo net that can be lowered over the deep water pit. Both of these features are incorporated into the birthday party pool activities ... they are a real highlight of the party.

Do you have a toddler's pool?

No ... at La Trobe we only have the one 25m pool (with the deep water pit off the side).

For how long does the birthday party go?

The party lasts for 2 ½ hours. The children will do one hour of activities followed by half an hour for lunch and then a further hour of activities.

What activities are offered during the birthday party?

There are a wide range of activities from which your child can choose.

The first hour is generally a dry activity.
We offer rock climbing, indoor soccer, basketball, netball, tennis, table-tennis, squash or volleyball. Your child can choose rock climbing (one of the most popular activities) which takes the full hour, or two half-hour blocks of different activities eg. basketball and indoor soccer. Please keep in mind that the rock climbing is weather dependent and, if it is too wet to climb, we will make other arrangements to do different activities on the day.

After lunch the children get to experience a variety of pool activities.
We have kayaks for them to paddle around in and have races. On our Tarzan rope they can swing into the water, and we finish up with the cargo net which we lower down to the pool, over which the children can climb, and through which they can have relays.

What age do your birthday parties suit?

The best ages for our parties are children aged 7 – 15 years. We do find that children under 7 can have difficulties with the depth of our pool, if they aren't confident in the water.

What if some of the children are weaker swimmers?

We have a number of fun, blue buoyancy belts that we can put on the children who may be weaker swimmers. The belts are designed for deep water running, so they don't restrict the children at all, and this enables them to float easily in the water.

How many children can I invite?

We do not set a limit on the number of children you can invite. We simply require a minimum of 10 children.

What about younger children, can they join in the birthday party?

We are happy for a younger sibling to join in the activities. We only ask, if the child is so young that they will take the birthday activity leader's attention away from the majority of the children, that a parent assists the younger child.

What sort of supervision will there be during the party?

The number of children at the party will determine how many activity leaders there will be. For example - a party with 10 children will have an activity leader present with the children for the whole time; a party of up to 20 children would have two activity leaders present; and up to 30 children would have three activity leaders. In addition, there would be a qualified pool lifeguard observing the swimming pool and assisting with the pool activities.

What decorations are provided for children's birthday parties?

The party is held in our pool lounge which overlooks the swimming pool. The birthday party is separated from general patrons so that your child has a private party. The room is decorated with ‘Happy Birthday' signs, coloured balloons around the room and on the chairs. The tables are set with plates, cups and serviettes, potato chips and lollies.

What do I have to bring to the party?

La Trobe Sports Centre will provide a variety of food for lunch and you only need to bring the cake. We have a large fridge and freezer if you want to bring an ice-cream cake. Don't forget that your child will probably receive lots of presents so keep in mind how you will get them home with you again. Oh ... and don't forget your camera!

What food is provided for the party?

We supply delicious party pies, sausage rolls, chicken nuggets, popcorn, potato chips, mixed lollies, cordial and soft drink!

We also understand that the parents get thirsty so there are tea and coffee facilities available for them.

There is plenty of food for the children but we understand that parents may want to bring along some specific food for their child's party or for parents who stay to watch and we are happy for you to do that.

We pride ourselves in our flexibility and can cater for special dietary needs. Above all we clean everything away for you while you relax and enjoy the party.

Does the food include lolly bags?

No ... however, we provide bowls of mixed lollies on the table during lunch. You are welcome to bring lolly bags if you would like.

What role do the parents have to play during the party?

We do not require that parents have to get into the water. We may ask that a parent assists with the rock-climbing, however we always have plenty of friendly sports centre staff around to help.

How much does it cost?

It is $19 per child which includes 2 ½ hours of activities and a qualified instructor. We pride ourselves in having a flexible and fun environment in which to make your child's birthday party a memorable experience.

What times can I book in for a birthday party?

Our parties always start on the hour (eg. 11:00 am – 1:30 pm; or 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm, and our latest party is 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm)

How can I book in for a birthday party?

We are happy to take bookings over the phone or you can book online and via our booking form.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Since party vacancies fill rapidly, we require a min $50.00 deposit to secure your booking. Once this deposit has been received we will send you a Birthday Party Information Pack which contains information about your party, maps and invitations. It also contains a ‘Conditions of Hire’ form for you to sign and return to us.

What if I have further questions?

We can tailor the parties to suit your needs so if you have further questions you are most welcome to ring the sports centre on 9479 2973.
