SPORTS COACHING

TENNIS COACHING

Are you a tennis fan looking to improve your game or take up the sport for the first time?  Then register in  this tennis course which caters for both beginners and advanced participants and are run by:

Gripping Potential (GP)

Beginner Course
To develop the basic skills needed to successfully play a tennis match:  Forehand, Backhand, Combining the two, Serve, Serve/Smash, Volley, Forehand/Backhand/Baseline Point Play, Serve/Volley/Net Play and a mini tournament. Maximum class size is 14 so be quick to book in!
Intermediate/Advanced Course
The Advanced course aims to build on players existing skills, to further advance their ability to play the sport.  Ground Strokes – Topspin, Flat, Slice, Return/Serve- Power & Control, Net Play – Zone, Strategy – Net & Ground strokes, Serve & Revision of all topics covered thus far, Percentage Play, Mental Toughness – Thought Processes, Footwork – Quickness & Agility, Revision and a Tournament.

GOLF COACHING

Learn the basics of golf in our 6 week golf program held at La Trobe Golf Range and Adventure Minigolf – 906 Plenty Road, Bundoora.   Suitable for all skill levels. All equipment and balls are supplied.

SQUASH COACHING

Learn the basic skills and the rules of squash and gear up for some fun in La Trobe’s squash competitions.  In this 5 week program, you will develop all basic strokes and receive instruction on how to play and score/referee a game of squash.   It will include information on how to warm up and cool down, do pre-pattern drills for advanced or intermediate players and modified match plays for beginners. This game is fast learning and fun. This could be the smartest thing you do for your fitness. 

Women’ Squash Coaching– 1hour lessons for any women wanting to give squash a go in a relaxed and social environment.

 

LEARN TO SWIM FOR ADULTS

This program has been specifically designed to help improve your swimming ability in conjunction with water familiarisation.   These five-week intensives provide adults with professional water tuition through our qualified instructors aiming to improve swimming strokes which include freestyle, backstroke, breast-stroke and survival backstroke.

 

HEALTH AND WELL BEING

PILATES
Pilates is a unique form of exercise useful in increasing the range of movement of the back, hips and knees whilst improving posture and core strength.  Pilates specifically targets strengthening, flexibility, mobility and relaxation techniques to enhance the performance of both mind and body.  If you are looking for an alternative to high-impact exercise or looking to complement your sport or training program - Pilates is the answer.  The Pilates courses progressively increase in intensity as your strength, co-ordination and flexibility improve.
Pilates Floor
The Pilates floor classes use floor exercises to provide a challenging workout, aimed at improving strength and flexibility of the lower back, abdominals and postural muscles.  Beginner and Intermediate classes are offered.
Pilates Combo  
This Pilates class introduces the use of equipment to add to the challenge.  If you like a class with lots of variety this is the class for you. It has a combination of stretches, floor exercises, Swiss ball exercises and the foam roller. The extra benefits derived from the use of Swiss balls and foam rollers include an increased level of balance, flexibility, strength and co-ordination.  The use of equipment allows for more leg strengthening work in combination with core strength.  Beginner and intermediate classes are offered.

YOGA
Yoga is an integrated system of education for the body and mind.  Using gentle physical movements (postures), breathing techniques, systematic relaxation and meditation techniques students learn how to bring about a state of integrated calmness and unity in body and mind.  We have two forms of yoga – Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga, which are suitable for all levels.

Hatha yoga classes aim to bring balance and harmony to the body, mind and spirit through yoga poses, relaxation and breathing.   Hatha yoga is used to guide beginner, as well as intermediate students, toward a body / mind integration that will improve the body's physical health, bring calmness to the emotions and clarity to the mind.

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic style balancing strength and flexibility, while harnessing the power of transformative breath.  Consistent practice is guaranteed to clear the mental & physical stress of everyday life, and introduce you to a space of clarity, regardless of your levels of fitness & flexibility.

 

DANCE

DANCE – Intermediate Modern Jazz
Jazz has become one of the most popular dance styles in recent years, mainly due to its popularity on movies, music videos, commercials and television shows such as “So You Think You Can Dance”.  The intermediate Jazz class is aimed at dancers with previous dance experience.  Whether you are currently a dancer, or haven’t danced for some time, this is the class to get you back into it.  Using a combination of many dance styles this class is guaranteed to get you moving.

DANCE - Belly
Fun & Fitness! Learn Belly dance skills to modern tracks of world music.  The belly dance classes will assist in improving fitness, flexibility and strength with skilful and controlled moves from Folk Traditions to Pop Sharbi.  Belly dance is a suitable low impact activity for everyone.   'Shimmy & Shake ' to pop songs from Arabia to Australia.
DANCE – Funk & Hip Hop
The Funk & hip Hop dance style incorporates the latest movements from video clips and club dancing from around the world. It provides a fantastic physical workout and is extremely popular with both guys & girls.  Learn the latest moves and get ready to strut your stuff on the dance floor! Beginner/ Intermediate classes are available

DANCE –Reggae  
Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. Reggae dance is very popular nowadays using a combination of Hip hop moves and other dance elements combined with traditional reggae.  This dance style can be seen in many music film clips and uses a lot of strong drum rhythms.  Reggae dancehall movements focus on the whole body wave and hip. Reggae is all about feeling the rhythm and a great way to keep fit.

DANCE – Street Latin with Alan
Alan’s Street Latin classes are a fusion of different street genres into a Latin based dance class.  Using basic choreography with maximum energy, this class will be guaranteed to get you moving. No partners required but get ready for some booty shakin!
DANCE – Street Latin with Julian
Street Latin with Julian involves a stylized form of Street Latin, focusing on partner work, timing, and good body rhythm! Looking at forms of Salsa, Mambo and Argentine Tango, this class is a great introduction for beginners to the even more advanced dancer.
WARNING: This class contains highly contagious dance moves!
DANCE – Latin American
Come and learn some of the funky moves that you've seen in the likes of “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance!” This class looks at a varied vocabulary of dances including Samba, Jive, the romantic Rumba and many more! Fun packed classes good for the soul and your fitness too!

DANCE – Modern Ballroom
Do you look at the word 'Ballroom' and you think of your grandparents dancing? Well think again! There is a new wave of ballroom dancing! This fun and energetic class will show you the new modernized style of ballroom dancing, with dances including international Tango, the highly acclaimed Foxtrot, and speedy footwork of the Quickstep! The instructor, a 2009 'New Vogue' National Open Ballroom Finalist,  will assure you learn with good technique with just as much fun and laughter!

DANCE - New Jazz
“New Jazz” is the latest dance style combining elements from many disciplines, such as Reggae, Hip-Hop and modern Jazz. Commonly seen in MTV and in nightclubs it focuses on flexibility and fluid movement to give you some sexy dance movements to take the dance floor!


DANCE – Mixed up Modern
Mixed up Modern is a modern style dance class that incorporates other styles such as Hip-Hop, African and Tap beats into the dances learned during the 5 week course. It is aimed at beginners, however those with a little bit of dance experience won’t be disappointed. The aim of the class is to learn a range of dance styles, improve fitness and flexibility, and of course, to have fun! 

 

GROUP FITNESS

BOXING FITNESS
This a high energy class to music for those who want to increase their cardiovascular fitness and learn some basic kickboxing skills along the way. With the use of bags and mitts, learn how to execute a jab, hook, uppercut, front kick and roundhouse. No prior kickboxing experienced required and suitable for all levels of fitness. A fantastic and fun way to improve your fitness.

EXTREME FITNESS CHALLENGE (boot camp style)
An intensive calorie burning and total body conditioning ‘circuit’ infused with a combination of high intensity cardiovascular and weight resistance exercises. Similar to boot camp, the classes will include a combination of: Swiss balls, weights, steps, skipping rope and boxing to motivational beats. This class is suitable for those with a degree of fitness and for those up for the challenge of increasing their level of fitness.
DYNAMIC MARTIAL ARTS – For fitness & Flexibility
Feel more flexible and get fit with DYNAMIC Martial Arts. A fine blend of Jujitsu, Goju Ryu Karate, Kickboxing and Kung Fu.  This class provides a realistic and effective defence system which is street smart. Training will be provided to all levels of experienced and inexperienced amateurs as well as martial arts exponents. Fighting techniques, grappling moves and fitness exercises will be covered. GREAT for enhancing confidence, and yourself belief in self defence.
Duration: 1.5 hr
Coach: 'Sensei' Eshan Arya - 3rd DAN black belt Jujitsu, 3rd DAN black belt Goju Ryu,3rd DAN black belt Kobudo.
SPORT & FITNESS FOR WOMEN
Each week a Sports Centre instructor will conduct a fun social sport or fitness activity.  Activities can include Swimming, Badminton, Squash, Light Group Exercise, Yoga, Pilates, Tennis, Gym Circuit class.  These classes are aimed at women who are new to exercise and sports or for those that enjoy fun social sport and fitness in a relaxed environment.

 

COMPETITIONS & EVENTS

TRI ATHLON
This ultimate modern day sport is a great way to have fun and improve your fitness.  The unique multisport challenges and inspires people from beginners competing in their first event, to highly skilled and talented athletes racing against the clock.  This year the Sports Centre, in conjunction with the Eltham Tri Open Water Club are hosting the Golden Slipper Triathlon Event; the Golden Slipper (400m Swim, 14km Bike, 4km Run) will be joined by a First Timers Event (200m Swim, 4km Bike, 1km Run), perfect for those starting out at triathlon and getting involved in this great sport, a fantastic way to support a healthy lifestyle.  The day will be followed by a social BBQ and prize presentations.

RING ROAD RELAY
The Annual Ring Road Relay is a running relay race scheduled for Thursday 15 October 2009, from 12.00pm to 2.00pm.  Challenge yourself and three team-mates over the gruelling 2.7 kilometre circuit. Walking groups are encouraged to enter although times will not be recorded.
The cost of registering a team is $16 – only $4 per runner!  To enter your team for the event simply complete a registration form at the Sports Centre reception.  Call 9479 2973 for any inquiries.  It’s a great opportunity for bragging rights!

INDOOR SOCCER COMPETITION
Enter a team in the indoor soccer competition and you and your friends will have the opportunity to be crowned the La Trobe Sports Centre Indoor Soccer Champions! The tournament is regulated according to official indoor soccer rules to ensure the highest quality of competition possible.  Depending upon the number of teams, there maybe two separate pools organized based upon previous participation and level of play.
 
CHALLENGE COMPETITIONS
Table Tennis
Challenge other table tennis players to a match and work your way to the top of the challenge ladder!  This free competition allows you to challenge players one to two places above you on the ladder to a match, if you win you move up the ladder.  We will provide participants with the names and detail of all competitors and it’s the responsibility of competitors to organise a game and book facilities at a time convenient to both parties.  Competition is designed to be flexible so that you can play matches around your study and work commitments. Contact details will be kept confidential.
All classes and course are open to La Trobe students, staff and the public. So bring your friends and family along!!
