Publications Committee

The Publications Committee was established in February 1968 (Academic Board minute 9.16). The terms of reference were amended in October 1980 (Academic Board minute 162.24). This committee was made a sub-committee of the Research and Graduate Studies Committee (RGSC) in April 1991 (AB minute 165.3.1). The terms of reference were amended by the RGSC in October 1992 and in July 1999. The Committee meets four times a year, normally the first Wednesday in February, May, August and November. There are two calls for applications, in April (books only) and in October (books and journals).

Support for Publication of Scholarly Journals and Books
Call for Applications for Grants-in-Aid

The publication of scholarly books, CD ROMs and journals produced by academic and general staff plays an important role in advancing learning and research and enhancing the academic profile of the University. As such, La Trobe University’s Publications Committee is charged with supporting such publishing endeavours. The current Chair of the Publications Committee is Professor Randy LaPolla from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Members of the Committee include a representative from each of the five Faculties of the University, a nominee of the University Librarian, a nominee of the Director, Marketing and Communications and a co-opted member with expertise in electronic publishing.

The Publications Committee recognises that in many cases, new books, CD ROMs and journals would not be viable without financial assistance. The Committee therefore provides publication support mainly through the provision of subsidies.

Staff are invited to apply for publication grants-in-aid in April (books only) and October (books and journals) of each year. Although the scheme is highly competitive, the Publications Committee is able to provide grants-in-aid for several books and journals per year, with amounts of up to $5,000 for a book or CD ROM and $5,000 for a journal.

Applications for subsidies are normally accepted from academic and general staff of the University. Applicants must demonstrate that the publication is likely to advance learning and the intellectual reputation of La Trobe University and that there is a sound business plan associated with the publication. Applications are normally accepted only for assistance with books and CD ROMs that meet the definition of a research publication. In addition, requests for subsidies are only considered for books and CD ROMs that have been accepted for publication by a reputable publishing company or agency.

In the case of journals, grants-in-aid are seeding funds only, so that the maximum period over which grants may be awarded is five years. Renewal applications are required each year. Applicants for journal grants-in-aid must demonstrate that manuscripts will be peer reviewed by leading authorities within the relevant discipline. The Committee also encourages editors to have their journal accepted on the DEST register of refereed journals if it is not already listed.
