Living allowance scholarships
Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarships
La Trobe University offers a number of living allowance stipends to students undertaking full-time research degrees through the Australian Government's Research Training Program. Applicants must be Australian citizens or have completed one year of residence in Australia prior to the application closing date.
Applicants must have completed at least four years of tertiary studies at a very high level of achievement (i.e. first class honours degree or equivalent) at an Australian university or recognised overseas university. Awards are made according to academic merit. The closing date for applications is 31 October.
The RTP Stipend Scholarship provides a living allowance in addition to the RTP Fees Offset Scholarship paid directly to the University by the Australian Government to offset costs for tuition and institituional support of your studies. Please note that an RTP Fees Offset Scholarship is not a paid stipend and not all candidates in receipt of a Fees Offset Scholarship will receive a Stipend Scholarship.
In 2017, the RTP Stipend is AU$26,682 per annum full-time, or AU$13,341 per annum part-time (taxable).
La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (LTUPRS)
These scholarships are normally available for full-time research Master's or PhD candidates. As with the APA, these scholarships are competitive and are based on academic merit. La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships are open to citizens of all countries including Australia and New Zealand.
Applicants must have completed at least four years of tertiary studies at a very high level of achievement (i.e. first class honours degree or equivalent) at an Australian university or recognised overseas university. The closing date for applications is 31 October for Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian Permanent Residents, and 30 September for other applicants.
In 2016, the LTUPRS is AU$26,682 per annum full-time, or AU$13,341 per annum part-time (taxable).
La Trobe University Research Equity Scholarships
The Board of Graduate Research will make up to five (5) La Trobe University Research Equity scholarships available to candidates who are commencing a research degree in 2017 who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders; have a disability, or; come from a low socio-economic background.
Applicants must complete the application form for research candidature and scholarship, submit the required documentation and include a 500 word submission outlining the socio-economic or other relevant factors that have hindered their studies.
Applicants for the low socio-economic background category must provide supporting financial documentation which includes a photocopy of their most recent tax return, or a Centrelink statement of income, or the payslips for the last three months of employment for each member of their household.
All applicants must:
- be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident;
- have achieved a high H2A or equivalent; and
- meet the eligibility criteria for the proposed course.
The scholarships are valued at $26,682 per annum (2017 rate) for up to three years for a doctoral degree by research and two years for Master's by Research. The scholarships will be governed by the same conditions of award as La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (LTUPRS). All applications for these scholarships are treated confidentially.
