Animal Research Ethics

Undergraduate student investigators:

The Code, Section 6 [7th Edition] states, where animals are used for teaching activities, students should be given the opportunity to discuss the ethical, social and scientific issues which are involved in the use of animals for scientific and teaching purposes. Where students are involved in the use of animals as part of their professional training, curricula in the academic discipline involved should include material on such issues.

The Animal Ethics Committee resolved to adopt the practices suggested in Clauses 6.2.3 and 6.2.4, viz:

  1. "a) People who are supervising students must ensure that prior to using animals, the students receive instruction in the ethical and legal responsibilities involved in the use of animals for scientific purposes as well as in the appropriate methods for animal care and use. The proposal must specify whether the student or the supervisor is responsible for the welfare of the animals at each stage of the project.
  2. b) Teachers must keep a record of the number of students involved and the number of animals used in each activity and the welfare outcomes."
