Animal Research Ethics

Record-Keeping and Reporting:

The following proforma should be used to meet the reporting requirements for projects approved by the La Trobe University Animal Ethics Committee.

Investigators are requested to use the most recent version of the proforma where possible. The most recent versions can be found below.

Experimental Animals:
The AEC requires that all investigators maintain standard records concerning animal numbers, acquisition, transfer, use and destruction. The records may be kept on paper or computer spreadsheet and must be available to the AEC on request. An Experimental Animals Records form is available. All animal facilities must be labelled according to AEC requirements.
Stock and Colony Animals:
All owners of stock or breeding animals are required by the AEC to submit a monthly report to the Committee. The report must be reflective of the regulatory requirements [POCTA (Further Amendment 2004) Regulation 14(f)(ii) to (v)] and may be submitted by the colony owner or through the animal housing facility manager. A Stock and Colony Animals form is available.
Adverse Incidents:
Investigators are required by law to "promptly notify the Animal Ethics Committee of any unexpected or adverse effects which occur during the period of the approved project and which impact on the welfare of the animals", Clause 3.1.12 of the 7th Edition of the Code. An Incident Report form is available.
Progress Reports:
Chief Investigators must complete and submit a progress report of animal numbers and usage per project for one calendar year no later than by the 12th February the following calendar year.
Final Reports:
Chief Investigators must complete and submit a final report within 3 months of conclusion of an AEC-approved project.
Bureau of Animal Welfare Animal Usage Return:
In accordance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, chief investigators must complete an annual usage return each calendar year and forward it to the AEC Secretary no later than by 12 February the following year. The Bureau of Animal Welfare guidelines provide details on how to complete the return. The Committee ruled on non-compliance regarding annual reporting by chief investigators.
Please note that all animal ethics procedures are now handled in electronic format only. All forms should be submitted via email.
