Research Ethics and IntegrityRecombinant DNA ResearchInstitutional Biosafety Committee InformationThe Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) in place at La Trobe University is called the Genetic Manipulation Supervisory Committee (GMSC). The GMSC is constituted according to the Gene Technology Act 2000 and reports to the OGTR on gene technology research conducted at La Trobe University. The GMSC strives to protect the safety of researchers, students and the environment by providing professional advice and assessments on risks related to gene technology work at La Trobe University. The Committee reviews research proposals involving gene technology, inspects and recommends facilities for certification with the OGTR, maintains records of dealings conducted in La Trobe facilities, and provides advice to investigators and other interested parties on relevant legislation and guidelines. All recombinant DNA work at La Trobe University must be reviewed by the GMSC prior to commencement. La Trobe University staff conducting dealings in AgriBiosciences Centre facilities must adhere to the requirements of the AgriBiosciences Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Researchers proposing to conduct a DNIR or a DIR require approval from the GMSC and the AgriBiosciences IBC prior to a licence application being submitted to the Regulator.
