Information for HDR Students

Introduction and Welcome

These web pages are an introduction to resources and support for higher degrees by research students, and the requirements and organisation of research degrees at La Trobe University (LTU). Higher degrees by research - Doctor of Philosophy, Professional Doctorates (those that are at least two-thirds research) and research masters - are established under the authority of University Statutes through the Academic Board.

There are a variety of procedures and offices that support postgraduate research students. These web pages provide an overview at the university level. Some aspects of degrees by research are organised at the faculty or school/division or program/department/unit level (usually putting into effect principles that are common throughout LTU). Your supervisor will be able to advise about those matters or will at least be able to direct you to the person ask.

Some of the information here will be irrelevant to you and you will quite possibly need to know something that is not included. Your supervisor is the most important person for you and will most often be the person to ask. Another person you should know and may need to consult is the Postgraduate Coordinator for your department or program.

These pages also describe staff roles with regard to higher degrees, on the 'Organisation' page for example, and some La Trobe resources and services that are available to other students as well higher degree students, e.g. the counselling service.
