Research Progress Panels (RPPs) Implementation

This year students of Higher Degrees by Research will report to and meet with a Research Progress Panel (RPP). Some Schools and departments have created RPPs to support research students' work in the past and will be able to use or adapt those panels and their procedures to meet the new requirements. These procedures are being implemented throughout the university. However some students who have not started their research degree this year, have a well established project and are making good progress may be exempt from reporting to an RPP.

RPPs support research students (and their supervisors) by bringing together expertise appropriate to students' research project and by providing a means to support the best possible quality research and student learning and experience. RPP meetings provide students with feedback, appropriate encouragement and another resource for resolving problems. They may also contribute to students developing their presentation skills and skills for defending their work.

Milestones and Timeframes are part of students' reporting and for RRPs' agreement. Some Milestones, such as agreeing the research proposal, presenting work in a seminar or conference ("significant work presentations"), agreeing a draft dissertation outline and completing a "Notice of Intention to Submit" are required for all students. Completion of ethics (human or animal) applications is another milestone that many students have to complete. As well as being an aid to tracking progress, milestones, both mandatory ones and those that are specific to a particular project, are an aid to completing the research and degree within the time allowed.

One further task required of RPPs is that they confirm continuation of candidature.

For this first round of reporting, students (and supervisors) will be sent an email with a link to the Research Progress Report form. The form can also be download here from the forms web page.
