Higher Degrees by Research - information for students

International Students

If you are an international student who has completed your enrolment you will be familiar with La Trobe International (LTI). The LTI office staff can answer many questions that you may have about your visa and immigration status in Australia, as well as questions about study at La Trobe. This page has a few important point for international students studying higher degrees by research.

Student visas are issued by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) with conditions which may include:
• satisfy course requirements (you must be enrolled full time and continuation of candidature confirmed each year - as decided by your Research Progress Panel - condition 8202)
• study with the education provider where you initially enrol for the first year of the course (condition 8206)
• advise the University within seven days of any change of address (condition 8533)

Here is a link to the DIAC postgraduate research page which has more information about student visas.

There are many other conditions which may be included in your visa. Ask LTI office staff or DIAC (phone: 131 881). Click here for a link to contact details for the Office of DIAC Melbourne.

The University is obliged to notify DIAC if students breach visa conditions, change courses, or discontinue their studies.

If you need to extend your candidature and are an International student receiving a scholarship you have to consult La Trobe International staff, and your scholarship provider or their representative.

If you experience financial difficulties that affect your ability to pay your tuition fees on time, you can apply for an extension to payment at the La Trobe International before the fees are due.

For more detailed information, see a staff member at La Trobe International, phone the DIAC inquiry line on 131 881, or see the DIAC website at: http://www.immi.gov.au/students/.
