The CCV...1,2,3 Project

Raising awareness at La Trobe about

  • The new cervical cancer vaccine
  • Cervical cancer and HPV

The Public Health Students? Association (PHSA) at La Trobe University ran their very own health promotion project, ?CCV?1, 2, 3? in 2007. With the free provision of the HPV vaccine beginning in July 2007, the PHSA ran a program to raise awareness about the cervical cancer vaccine, cervical cancer and HPV amongst staff and students at La Trobe where approximately 10,000 students were eligible to receive it. The major component of the program was a seminar held on the 14th August, with two accompanying research components.

Special thanks go to Pro Vice Chancellor Liz Lavender (Shepparton Campus),and Pro Vice Chancellor Kerry Ferguson (Equity and Access), Rick Hayes and Rae Walker, and Priscilla Robinson our project supervisors, who have all provided us with immense support and assistance throughout the project!

Overall, the program had some great outcomes, especially for the students involved. Not only did they learn more about the vaccine themselves, but they had numerous opportunities to further their health promotion practice skills. The program gained great attention across Australia, with students being invited to present about CCV...1,2,3 at the 2008 Population Health Congress in Brisbane, and in partnership with Dr Priscilla Robinson had a letter published in the Medical Journal of Australia, and also presented at the 2008 ANAPHI teaching and learning conference (Priscilla Robinson presented at this).

Project Brief

Was a HUGE success!!!! Thankyou to everyone who contributed to this program including the PHSA members, HIMSA members, our guest speakers, exhibitors, organisations who sent us information to give to students, our supervisors, Liz Lavender, the Equity and Access Unit, Division of Health Studies, School of Public Health and everyone who gave us so much support and encouragement, this was a real team effort and it definitely showed!

The seminar dvd will be available for loan from the Borchadt library soon.

Copies of the guest speakers presentations will also be available as links from this page soon

Guest speakers - Thankyou!

Our guest speakers were fantastic, they provided us with lots of relevant and interesting information. It was great to see such a good range of information being provided to students who may not have heard about these issues elsewhere.

These experts have been working in the field of women's health for many years and we are proud and priveliged to be able to welcome them to La Trobe and that they have given us their time to talk to us about this important issue.

We truly enjoyed your presentations and look forward to the possibility of working with you again in the future!

Are you an international student at La Trobe?

There has been a great deal of confusion about the eligibility of international students receiving the vaccine for free.

To be eligible for the free vaccine you must be aged 18-26, and be eligible for Medicare.

If not, you will have to pay for the vaccine. We have heard that some health insurance companies will be giving a rebate for the vaccine but you will need to check with your individual insurers.

You can call the 'Immunise Australia Hotline' on 1800 671 811.

'OddSocks'

OddSocks was an installation during the 2007 Melbourne Fringe Festival at Federation Square. It used a typical Australian backyard clothesline as a centerpiece, with health professionals such as Diabetic Associations, podiatrists and physiotherapists providing relevant information onsite. During their lifetime nearly half of all Australians will suffer from some sort of foot problem. Many people work on their feet, and some people?s feet deserve special attention because of their phase of life including children, older people, people with diabetes, and people who use their feet for recreation. Good foot health is important to everyone. So are socks!

This project was run by Dr Priscilla Robinson with the assistance of Carmel Hobbs, Meagan Chiuchiarelli and Natasha Krajcar. As the project continued, many more students and staff in the School of Public Health were involved.

Following the installation, the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health published OddSocks at the Melbourne Fringe Festival: A methods paper for using an arts installation in promoting public health.
