Undergraduate studies

Public Health and Health Sciences

Public health can be defined as social action to protect and promote health and to prevent disease and injury. Health Sciences is the collective name for a group of studies which seek to understand the problems that health poses for society and to provide the skills, knowledge and techniques to overcome them through research, policy and practice.

In addition to the quality and friendliness of our teaching approach, our staff enjoy national and international reputations in their respective fields as a result of their extensive research and publication activities.

Undergraduate degrees

For undergraduates, the School offers a Bachelors degree in the general field of Health Sciences and another in Health Information Management. There are several double degrees some of which combine Health Sciences with other disciplines while others provide a wider range of study within Health Sciences itself. There is also a graduate entry course in Pastoral Care.

The Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) is a generalist degree and provides the opportunity for students to develop a broad understanding of the field of health sciences, while pursuing closer interest areas within the human biosciences or public health domains.

The new first year

From 2009, there will be an interdisciplinary common first year taken by all undergraduates in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The focus is on basic human biosciences, on the factors influencing health and on developing an understanding of the roles of health professionals in the health and welfare sectors.
