The Unit

Evidence-based public health and health promotion, offered by the School of Public Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences at La Trobe University from 2005, is designed for people wanting in-depth learning in the area of evidence-based public health. This unit will be suitable for postgraduate students in public health, health policy and health services management programs.

What is "Evidence-Based Public Health and Health Promotion"?

Evidence-based public health refers to the development, implementation, and evaluation of effective programs and policies in public health through application of evidence, including systematic appraisal of research and appropriate use of program planning models. It aims to directly link public health practice with evidence that demonstrates effectiveness.

Learning Objectives

Evidence-Based Public Health and Health Promotion will equip participants to understand, use and analyse evidence in public health policy, practice and research settings. Participants will also develop a critical understanding of evidence-based approaches in public health. At the completion of their study in this unit students will be able to:

  • understand the history and rationale for evidence-based approaches to public health.
  • describe and locate resources relevant to Australian and international developments for preparing systematic reviews of public health interventions.
  • critically consider the principles and criteria for assessing evidence
  • use practical skills for appraisal and synthesis of evidence
  • critically discuss evidence-based approaches to public health and health promotion
Assessment

Assessment will comprise one 1 500 word essay, one 2 500 word essay, and participation in class discussions and activities.

Details: Dates, Materials and Methods

The unit will run for five days over a five-week period with an additional day of reading required. The teaching mode comprises of lectures, seminars, workshops and group activities. The unit will be held at the Franklin St, La Trobe University City Campus. The teaching dates for the 2008 first semester can be found on the above timetable.

The unit is a 15 credit point (one eighth of a full-time year) postgraduate elective unit in the La Trobe School of Public Health, and may be able to be credited at other universities. Credit arrangements for other universities should be discussed with the relevant course coordinator at the other university.

Mid-year places are available for those who are interested in enrolling in the MPH program. People not currently enrolled in a relevant program of studies can also complete this subject on an external single subject basis.

Unit Development

This unit has been developed at The School of Public Health, La Trobe University with the assistance of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing through a Public Health Education and Research Program (PHERP)Innovations grant.
