DrPH, University of California, Berkeley (focus: occupational health, epidemiology, health policy), MPH, University of California, Berkeley (focus: health planning and administration), BA, Yale University (majors: biology and political science).

Interests

Vivian Lin is the Chair of Public Health. Since arriving in Australia in 1982, she has worked in NSW Health, Victorian Health Department and its successor, National Occupational Health and Safety Commission and Commonwealth Department of Health and Family Services. During this time, she has had responsibility for policy, planning, and program development across a wide range of health issues, including health promotion, ethnic health, Aboriginal health, aged care, health technology, pharmaceuticals, intergovernmental relations, regional planning, and health export. From 1997-2000, she was Executive Officer for the National Public Health Partnership.

Always remaining active in the community sector, Professor Lin has been the honorary policy convenor for the Public Health Association and has served on the Board of Management for Working Women's Health and the Public Health Committee of the Australian Medical Association. She is currently the Vice President for Scientific and Technical Development for the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) and a director for the Chinese Health Foundation of Australia. Professor Lin has an active international profile in the Asia Pacific Region. She consults for the World Bank UK Department for International Development and the World Health Organzation, particularly in relation to health promotion and health system development. She is a member of the Australia China Council. In recent years she has been convenor of: 1: Socioeconomic determinants theme for the 6th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and Pacific (ICAAP ) meeting 2002; 2: Scientific working group for the 18th World Congress on Health Promotion (IUHPE ) meeting 2004 and 3: Conference committee for the 3rd Australia and New Zealand Health Services and Policy Research meeting 2003.

Professor Lin was a member of the Dairy Food Safety Board of Victoria from 2000-2003 and has served as President of the Chinese Medicine Registration Board of Victoria since 2000. She served on the Medicine and Public Health Panel for the Performance-based Research Funding scheme of the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission in 2003 and 2006. Since 2003 she has served as a board member of the CRC on Aboriginal Health. She is currently the Book Review Editor of the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Public Health. She is Advisory Editor for Health Policy for Social Science and Medicine and a member of the editorial board of Health Education Research.
