Interests

Stephen has a deep and on-going interest in the following areas: the power of the therapeutic relationship; the ideas and influence of Carl Rogers; existential issues around problem gambling behaviour; the demystification of the therapeutic process; the exploration of links between humanistic, transpersonal and integral psychotherapies; the politics and manifestation of self care in therapists; the sociology and psychopathology of therapy turf wars; epistemologies of science, art and mysticism and their relationship to therapy; post-positive research methods; and, common factors in therapeutic change.

His current research for his Clinical Doctorate explores the experience of polyamory and its impact on counselling practice.

Stephen has taught in the Department for over ten years and has counselling people with gambling related issues since 1995. He is passionate about teaching in a way that address the intellectual, emotional and practical aspects of being a counsellor.
