Interests

Pranee is a medical anthropologist and has interests in the health of immigrants and refugees, women's health, mothers and children health, and the health of older persons, international health, reproductive and sexual health, and mental health. Pranee has carried out a number of research projects with immigrant women in Australia and women in Southeast Asia. Previously, Pranee focused her research more on reproductive health and motherhood among immigrant women and women in SEA. But recently, she pays more attention of sexual health of Asian women. She has recently undertaken qualitative research with women living with HIV/AIDS in Thailand. Pranee’s research interest also includes online research and has carried out research in the area of online dating and implications for sexual health. Pranee has also supervised a number of students, both local and international, who have their interests on gender, reproductive and sexual health.

Pranee has been teaching in the areas of health, culture and society at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and this include Culture, Society and Women's Health and Gender, Ethnicity and Health, Community Groups and Public Health, and Health and Australian Society. Pranee has also been supervising a number of honours and postgraduate students and publishing widely in these areas. Pranee is a qualitative researcher and has written several texts on this approach. She teaches research method subjects at the School of Public Health within the honours and postgraduate programs. Pranee co-ordinates several research method subjects in the Honours and postgraduate programs, and the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Research Methods course.

Committee Membership

Pranee has served on a number of committees including research advisory committee and community development in health. Pranee has served on School of Public Health Research Committee, and currently a number of external Advisory Committees including: the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Cultural and Linguistic Diversity, Department of Health Service, Victoria; the Research Evaluation Committee at BreastScreen Victoria; the National Centre for HIV Social Research, the University of New South Wales; and the inaugural Public Health Research Expert Advisory Panel (PHREAP), Department of Human Services, Victoria. Pranee is also on the editorial committee on several journals including the International Journal of Multiple Research Approaches, Journal of Reproductive and Infant Psychology and Birth Issues Journal.

Recent Professional Award

Pranee was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2007. The induction was undertaken on the 2007 International Women's Day, by the Victorian Minister for Women's Affairs, Jacinta Allan. Pranee was amongst 20 other individual women and 10 female doctors who have made a lasting contribution to women in Victoria. This honour roll is the result of her pioneer work on childbirth issues of immigrant women in Victoria as well as her leadership in qualitative research methodology in health in Australia. The Honour Roll recognises the outstanding contributions and achievements of Victorian women from all walks of life - past and present. It was launched in 2001 as part of Centenary of Federation Celebrations and continues until 2008, when the centenary of women's suffrage will be marked.
