Australian Institute of Primary Care (AIPC)

The Australian Institute for Primary Care promotes quality improvement and best practice in all areas of primary health care. It supports the integration of theory and practice in primary health care and promotes the standing and visibility of primary health care and community health services. Institute services are provided through the following units: Centre for Development and Innovation in Health, Centre for Social Health, Lincoln Gerontology Centre. The Institute provides expert consultancy and project management, research and development, information, education and training services, and accreditation and standards reviews for primary care and community service providers. Institute staff contribute to teaching in the School of Public Health and supervise honours, masters and doctoral students.

Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health & Society

The Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, located at the City campus, was established in 1992 with core funding from the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation. Staff at the Centre research the social, psychological, epidemiological and cultural aspects of human sexuality and sexual health, in a national and international context. In addition to conducting their own research, staff at the Centre supervise postgraduate students and teach postgraduate courses in sexuality, health and social research, and short courses. The Centre has a strong commitment to consulting and involving relevant community groups during the formulation and conduct of research and in providing feedback on research findings.

Bouverie Centre

The Bouverie Centre, Victoria's Family Institute, is a statewide, integrated academic, clinical and community consultation agency, specialising in family approaches within mental health service provision. Clinical and community consultation services are targeted to deal with relevant adult, youth and child related family difficulties as well as providing some more specialised teams working with the impact of sexual abuse and acquired brain injury. The Centre has a long history of providing training to professionals working with families, offering award courses at the graduate certificate, postgraduate diploma, master, PhD and professional doctorate levels as well as a comprehensive Continuing Education program.

Centre for Development and Innovation in Health

The Centre for Development and Innovation in Health (CDIH) operates as a research, consultancy and policy analysis agency with a broad scope across the health system nationally. The centre's specialisations are in primary health care, community development, public health, women's health and health promotion.

CDIH has been publishing resource material, innovative research and critical commentary since 1987. Much of this material is available for download through the Centre for Development and Innovation in Health (CDIH) Publications website.

Cochrane Consumers and Communication Review Group

The Cochrane Consumers and Communication Review Group, based at the Bundoora campus, coordinates the preparation and production of Cochrane systematic reviews of interventions which affect consumers' interactions with health care professionals, services and researchers. The interventions may relate, for example, to individual use of health care services, or to consumer participation in health planning, policy and research. The reviews are published on the Cochrane Library.

Lincoln Gerontology Centre

The Lincoln Gerontology Centre, established in 1987, was the first of its kind in Australia. Its aim is to contribute to, and disseminate knowledge that assists in improving, the quality of life, health and care of older people. The Centre is situated with the Australian Institute for Primary Care. The Centre undertakes research and consultancies in the areas of aged care services, the physical and psychological health of older people, health behaviours of older people, employment and older workers, retirement and care giving.

Palliative Care Unit

Established in 1998, the Palliative Care Unit is a practice unit that provides education and training, direct service provision, and social research. Undergraduate subjects in the sociology of death and dying, and in health promoting palliative care are offered, as is a postgraduate diploma in health promoting palliative care. Staff also supervise doctoral research. Direct services consist of educational and support groups for people living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. These groups run for eight weeks at a time and are held regularly throughout the year. Research interests and staff publications cover: pastoral care, social experiences of living with cancer, social aspects of death, dying and mystical experiences, service delivery models in palliative care, non-compliance in medical treatments, palliative care policy, and the meaning of animal companions in chronic illness. Rehabilitation Research and Training Unit

The Rehabilitation Research and Training Unit undertakes research and consultancies in the areas of injury management and control, vocational rehabilitation, rural health and rehabilitation, and rehabilitation counselling and conducts training for rehabilitation professionals. The Unit organises and conducts short courses in occupational rehabilitation, rehabilitation counselling and vocational rehabilitation and rehabilitation case management.
