Research Student Get-Togethers

Posgraduate Research Students - Lunch/Get-Togethers

Second Monday of every month (third Monday if a public holiday in second Monday)

Posgraduate Research Students - Lunch/Get-Togethers

A lunch/get-together for postgraduate research students is held on the second Monday of every month in HS1.115, from 12pm-1pm. Students are able to meet for "lunch and a chat", although recently some very creative students (led by Anne-Marie Scully, the new postgrad rep) have developed a program for themselves where they have invited a staff member to attend their lunch and talk to them about specific topics. It is a "BYO lunch and just come along" type of event, although some food is also provided. All postgraduate research students are most welcome (and encouraged) to join in.

Here are the dates for the remaining 2008 Lunches. Please mark them in your diaries now!

* Monday, 10 November 2008
* Monday, 8 December 2008

Tips for higher degree research students

contact Liz Morrison for user name and password to access tips provided by individuals
In response to a request from one of our current students, we are starting a "Research Tips for Higher Degree Research Students" listing. We hope you find it stimulating, useful (and also a bit of fun), and that you will contribute your own tips to encourage and motivate others.

To start the project off, a piece by Beth Rankin and colleagues (courtesy of LUPA) have been inlcuded as well as some notes from the authors of the recent Masterclass for PhD students. We look forward to many more tips!

Tips for doctoral students! (Make a point of reading these - they are good!)

Please email your contributions to this section of the PRN to Liz Morrison.

Research Festival
Friday, October 31, 2008, 9.15am - 2.00pm

All higher degree research students present their work at least once in every two years at the School's annual Research Festival.

This is an excellent opportunity for research students to get together with staff and other research students and learn more about one another's research endeavours.

Presentations are 15 minutes each, with 5 minutes allowed for discussion.

Lunch is provided and the annual Doctoral Celebration for those students who attained their doctorates in 2008 will take place during the lunch break.

Students enrolled in research methods subjects also present their research methods proposals at the Festival.

Contact Jean to let her know you are attending - or just turn up.
Invitation to doctoral students to network with staff and other doctoral students on a regular monthly basis.

Seminar 115’ (for want of a better name) is a monthly peer research seminar open to doctoral students and staff who are interested in meeting to talk about their projects. At times we also explore our topics and process experientially, using arts-based inquiry to represent them and respond to each others’ work.

If you are interested in coming to, or recruiting for, the peer seminar for people wanting to work experientially with their doctoral and post doctoral projects, this is just to let you know that Jean has booked HS1 115 again from 1-3pm for the third Friday of the month in 2008. Please take note of any of the dates you want to come.

Read what some of the other participants have said about Seminar 115

To some extent this seminar operates as a network for people interested in forms of presentational knowing and arts-based inquiry, with some members coming from other universities. The group is small but welcoming, usually between 4 and 9 people meet. We want it to be open - and the sort of group people can access when it is useful to them, but do not feel obliged to attend when they are busy.

Seminars take place in HS1 room 115. Visitors to the university can be booked into the visitors carpark if they email Jean Rumbold ahead of the day.

Attached is an impressionistic shot of one of the seminars last year, which was a postcard inquiry facilitated by Kathleen Gregory. She based it on a Narrative idea from Michael White, about the way our motives for our (research) work can get psychologised/pathologised, and the need to reclaim our conscious motives.

RGSO Lunchtime Seminars

Seminars have been arranged at both Bundoora & Bendigo. Dates shown here are for Bundoora - please check the program for Bendigo dates

The Research and Graduate Studies Office routinely runs a series of lunch-time research seminars for staff. Postgraduate research students are welcome to attend.
