The Health Information Management Program conducts short courses from time to time as professional development for people with a prior qualification in either health information management or clinical coding.

ICD-10-AM Coding Refresher Course - APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

Course Content

This online course aims to refresh skills and knowledge in the following areas, based on the 2008 10th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases - 6th edition - Australian modification (ICD-10-AM).

•  Coding skills at the casemix complexity level of a mid-size public hospital
•  Abstracting from the record
•  Content and application of the Australian Coding Standards
•  Introduction to AR-DRGs
•  VAED reporting
•  Coding software products

Dates
Commencing 1 March 2010.

Participants will need to have access to a computer and the internet for the duration of the course.

Application
Course fees will not be refunded after course commencement date. Withdrawal from the course prior to the commencement date will incur an administration fee of $100, which will be deducted from the refund.

The course fee is $1,375 (subject to change).
Optional tutorial $100 (date to be confirmed).
Coding Books or software (purchased through National Centre for Classification in Health, NCCH)

Selection Criteria
The course is aimed at people who have a past qualification in coding (MRA/HIMs, Nosologists and OTEN or DEP courses), have not been coding for some time, but wish to update their abstracting and coding skills. This may include:

•  People who have been temporarily out of the work force;
•  People who work in other areas of health information management or the health industry, and are not currently coding.

Clinical Coding Auditing Short Course - APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

Course Content

This course has been designed to develop skills in the auditing of coded data, and in analysing, reporting and acting on the audit outcomes. 

The course consists of five modules:

  • Module one - Clinical Coding
  • Module two - Principles of Casemix
  • Module three - Theory and Principles of Auditing
  • Module four - Statistical Analysis and Methodology
  • Module five - Audit Outcomes - reporting and strategic development
The course will be run as a distance education course with students required to work through course material in a systematic manner and within time frames outlined as part of the course administration.

Assessment will be in the form of one major assignment and one final examination.

Selection Criteria

Entry to this course is open to people who hold a qualification in clinical coding, obtained as part of a degree in Health Information Management or via one of the short courses that have been available in recent years. Extensive clinical coding experience is also recommended for this course.
