Special features of the course

Mentor Program

Students can take part in the special Mentor Program, and be matched with a practicing Health Information Manager who acts as a professional mentor to the student during the second half of the course until after graduation, assisting with professional networking and providing useful professional advice. This program is run by the University and the professional body, the Health Information Management Association of Australia (Vic Branch).

Honours Program

Students who are academically capable are able to extend their studies for an additional semester to complete the Master Health Information Management Honours program. This involves completion of a research methods unit and a thesis.

Professional Practice

In addition to on-campus classes, students participate in field visits and Professional Practice placements. Placements sometimes may be arranged at interstate or overseas health facilities, at the student’s request. The following student resources are available:

Awards and Prizes

HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA (VICTORIAN BRANCH) PRIZE

Awarded annually by the Health Information Management Association of Australia (Victorian Branch) to the Bachelor of Health Information Management Pass or Honours degree student who demonstrates academic excellence evidenced by the highest aggregate score in the third and fourth year health Information Management and related specified units.

THE NATIONAL CENTRE FOR CLASSIFICATION IN HEALTH PRIZE FOR CLINICAL CODING

Awarded to the final-year Bachelor of Health Information Management student with the highest aggregate score in the two final year clinical coding units.

THE CLINICAL CLASSIFICATION PRIZE

Awarded by the Health Information Management Association of Australia (Victorian Branch) to the Bachelor of Health Information Management student with the highest aggregate score in the second-year Health Classification units.

Course Recognition

Course graduates may apply for full membership of the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA). Further information on health information management can be accessed from the HIMAA web site.

Qualifications in Health Information Management

The course has developed from a short course, first conducted in 1949, to a two-year Associate Diploma, then a three-year Bachelor's degree, to a 3.5 year Bachelor's degree, and from 2009 a 4 year Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Health Information Management. The qualification titles and post-nominal abbreviations for each of the courses are detailed in the attached document. [Qualifications and postnominal abbreviations]

Application is done through VTAC. Non year 12 students and students intending to transfer MUST complete a Supplementary Information Form.

In the University Handbook you will find details of the course structure and descriptions of individual subjects for 2008. Sometimes, however, changes must be made which are not reflected in the Handbook.
