Bachelor of Information Systems and Master of Health Information Management

New double degree in 2009 - first of its kind

The only one of its kind in the world, this double-degree combination is being introduced by the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus, to meet the demand for health informatics skills in Australia.
Students undertaking this course will be able to able to learn skills in information systems and health information management, which will lead to a specific career path in health informatics. Other career opportunities include employment as health IT specialists, health data analysts, health information managers, and clinical information systems specialists.

What is health informatics?

Health Informatics is a dynamic and developing area that is impacting on all health care services and organisations. It is the intersection of information science, computer science, and health care. It deals with the resources, devices, and methods required to optimise the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine. Health informatics tools include not only computers but also clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, and information and communication systems.

Why undertake this double-degree?

There is a huge demand for health professionals who are experts in health informatics and health information management. Hospitals and health services throughout Australia are upgrading and expanding their health information and related clinical decision-support technologies and there is a progressive move towards the development and implementation of electronic health records and more sophisticated electronic clinical information systems. In addition, graduates of this double-degree program will have thorough training in information systems that could be utilised in non-health related fields, as well as in the other sub-disciplines of health information management.

Course structure

This double degree program is of four years full time duration and requires the completion of a Bachelor of Information Systems and a Masters level degree in Health Information Management, totalling 480 credit points. Part-time study is available. The course has been designed so that students may exit at the end of the third year with a Bachelor of Information Systems.
An honours degree in either stream is available, by invitation, to high achieving students.
Students will undertake professional education in Years 2 and 4 at healthcare agencies external to the University.

Professional Recognition

Graduates will achive profession-entry level competencies set by the Australian Computer Society and the Health Information Management Association of Australia.
The Bachelor of Information Systems is accredited by the Australian Computer Society, and graduates are eligible for Professional Membership. Accreditation for the Health Information Management is being sought from the Health Information Management Association of Australia.

Admission requirements

Prerequisites

Units 1 and 2 in general mathematics or mathematical methods and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

Year 12 applicants: ENTER and two stage process with a middle band* of approximately 20%.

Non Year 12 applicants: Academic record, Grade Point Average (GPA), relevant experience

*Middle band: Completing Units 3 and 4 of mathematical methods (either) or specialist mathematics=1.5 aggregate points higher per study. Performance in prerequisite studies will be considered.

International applicants are welcome to apply. The English language requirement IELTS is 6.5. For application processes and fee information, international applicants must refer to La Trobe International's website.
