BA(Hons) (Melb), MA(Clinical Psychology) (Melb), PhD (La Trobe)

I have held a joint appointment at the School of Psychological Science and North Western Mental Health (Melbourne Health), since 1992. This position is designed to build bridges between the public mental health services in Victoria on the one hand, and university research and training in clinical psychology, on the other. My teaching is primarily in the postgraduate professional programs and includes innovations in mental health care, psychopathology, and therapy and rehabilitation for psychotic disorders.

My current research includes:

  1. The “real world” effectiveness of cognitive behaviour therapy for people with psychotic disorders, especially our local version, “Recovery Therapy”.
  2. How people with persisting auditory hallucinations and other symptoms cope, including behavioural and information processing strategies; CBT for persisting command hallucinations; and, the use of mindfulness and distancing. (with students and MHRI colleagues)
  3. The phenomenology of hallucinations, delusions, overvalued ideas, and related phenomena in psychotic disorders, eating disorders and normal samples.
  4. Translating innovative treatments from research into practice, especially in public mental health services, including evidence based psychosocial interventions for Bipolar disorders and Family Interventions for Schizophrenia (with colleagues at North Western Mental Health, and the Psychosocial Research Centre)
  5. The nature of the relationship between mental health professionals and family carers of people with mental illness (with past doctoral students)
