Following the completion of my PhD in Buffalo I taught at the University of Oregon before moving to Australia. I joined La Trobe University in 1982. My research is on language. Prior to 1996, much of my research was with Indigenous children in central Australia acquiring Warlpiri as a first language. A second research interest was the motivation for language change, with research on the Western Nilotic languages of Uganda and Kenya. Since 1996, some of my research has been assessing grammatical knowledge of two year-olds using the intermodal preferential looking paradigm, some in collaboration with Professor Letty Naigles from the University of Connecticut. Other research has focused on children's language processing skills. More recently I have focused on the cognitive skills of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). The research has investigated the visuo-spatial memory of children with SLI, memory, the attention and narrative skills of children with SLI, and the numerical cognition of children with SLI. Current studies are on memory and attention with children with SLI and children with ADHD. Other research is related to the auditory processing skills of 4-7 year olds (collaborating with David Grayden from the University of Melbourne and the Bionic Ear Institute), and the language of children with autism. I am a chief investigator on the Early Language in Victoria Study (ELVS), which is based at the Royal Children’s Hospital. The study, funded by NHMRC, is investigating the early predictors and natural history of language impairment and literacy development in a longitudinal study with 1900 children (from 8 months - 7 years). There are also a number of spin-off projects. ELVS has recently formed the Child Language International Cohorts Collaboration (CLICC) with researchers from the UK, USA and Western Australia.Memberships and associations Current Editorships: Recent
