Community beliefs about Bulimic Eating Disorders

Who is conducting this study?
This project is being funded by La Trobe University and is being conducted by Professor Susan J. Paxton and Dr. Lynette Evans.

What is the aim of this study?
The goal of our research is to identify community beliefs about bulimic eating disorders so that we can find ways to improve understanding of these problems.

Why is this study important?
Bulimic eating disorders affect 5-10% of women in Australia and are frequently associated with depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. There are treatments available that have been demonstrated to be effective in reducing bulimic symptoms. However, it is most concerning that only a minority of sufferers from bulimic disorders seek appropriate treatment for their problems. We believe it is important to have a better understanding of community beliefs and attitudes about bulimic disorders so that we can find ways to increase participation in treatment.

Who can participate?
Men and Women aged over 18 can participate in this study.

How can I participate?
Involvement in our research will require completion of an anonymous questionnaire that assesses some information about yourself (demographic details, self-esteem, health and emotional well-being, eating behaviours), asks for your opinion about statements reflecting beliefs or attitudes about bulimic eating disorders and about a series of brief eating disorder mental health messages. Completion of the questionnaire will take 20-30 minutes. You may complete either a paper-and-pen version of the questionnaire or complete it online. If you prefer to complete a paper-and-pen version, please contact the researcher by phone or email and we will send you the questionnaire by mail and a reply payed envelope.

If you prefer to complete the survey online, you can go directly to the online survey and fill out the anonymous online questionnaire.
