School of Psychological Science

Welcome to Psychology at La Trobe

The School offers a range of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels specialising in the scientific study of human behaviour, including fields such as cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and behavioural neuroscience.

At the undergraduate level, the School offers a course with a strong focus on psychology, the Bachelor in Psychological Science degree. This degree provides a particularly good springboard for postgraduate training in professional psychology. It is also an excellent foundation for many other careers, as understanding human behaviour is central to so many fields, such as human resource management or counselling. The attributes our graduates acquire include excellent problem-solving and communication skills, and sound teamwork skills, which are highly sought after by prospective employers. You can find out more about the units offered in the undergraduate degree by following the links.

The postgraduate Clinical Psychology and Clinical Neuropsychology programs both have outstanding reputations and are well known for the quality of their graduates. The programs are long-established and have staff with recognised teaching expertise in their specialist fields. Notably, three of our professional program staff members have won national awards for teaching excellence.

The importance of psychological services to the well-being of our community is increasingly being recognised. Many government reports highlight the need for more psychologists to enhance the mental health of Australians. Importantly, Medicare reimbursement is now available for assistance for many psychological problems. These factors highlight the opportunities for people with postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Psychology. Follow the links to find out more about these courses.

The School has a vigorous and productive research base. It has a strong record in publications and attracting research funding, particular in the areas of its research strengths: Behavioural Neuroscience; Clinical Psychology; Cognitive and Developmental Psychology; and Social and Intercultural Psychology. The School has active postgraduate research programs and welcomes PhD students. If you are interested in pursuing research in an area of expertise of one our academic staff, please contact them and discuss your options.
