The Modern Era
Coordinator:Assoc. Prof. Harry Oldmeadow

The unit starts with René Guénon’s critique of modernity in The Reign of Quantity and then moves to a consideration of the thought and influence of Marx, Darwin, Nietzsche and Freud. Later in the unit we take some account of various other intellectual movements in the 19th and 20th centuries, including existentialism and post-modernism. Students will have the opportunity to follow their own more particular interests (within the context of the general concerns of the unit) in the research essay.
