Ms Sophie Wayth
Course of study:
Bachelor of Science
Bachelor of Science Education
Whilst studying at another university, I took part in La Trobe University’s In2Science initiative, a program that places science students in schools as mentors where they actively participate in teaching students. I knew I wanted to be a science teacher, and so it became an obvious choice to transfer to La Trobe’s double degree of Science / Science Education.
The program gave me countless opportunities to enhance my career, and as I knew I wanted to be a science teacher, it seemed the natural choice to transfer to La Trobe.
Transferring was initially daunting but the staff and students in the Faculty of Science made the process so easy; I was immediately welcomed as if I had become part of a small family. The campus atmosphere was so vibrant at Melbourne, including cafes, shops and beautiful gardens. Coming to uni every day was simply a delight.
The flexible structure of the degree allowed me to take part in countless practical placements, including my ongoing work with the In2Science program, in coordination with my ongoing study. Gaining this practical experience in schools has been invaluable in furthering my skills learnt at La Trobe, as well as enhancing my career opportunities. I feel it gave me a real edge over other students when seeking employment.
In late 2011, whilst completing my final year, I was offered an ongoing position at Ivanhoe Grammar School, teaching chemistry, science and mathematics.
Although working whilst studying has been challenging, I am excited by the career opportunities already open to me. Transferring to La Trobe was the best choice to make, for my education and my career. It has allowed me to be extremely successful in my studies and in the industry; and most importantly, it has made me happy.
