Course of study:
Bachelor of Agricultural Science 2010
My Bachelor of Agricultural Science is amazing! It is even better than I thought it would be. We cover such a broad range of subjects, including biology, chemistry, economics, remote sensing and soil science. What’s more, with so many different areas of study, that sometimes involve practical field-based classes, La Trobe University is the best choice because it has everything on the one campus.
After I finish my Bachelor with Honours, I plan to continue postgraduate study at La Trobe in either a Masters of Agricultural Science, or a PhD. When I finish I will have amazing career opportunities in a really wide range of fields, such as: agribusiness, farm management, or consultancy services. At this stage I plan to work in either agronomy or in the research of crop plant diseases.
As part of the degree, I have to complete a total of twelve weeks work experience, which will be really beneficial when I’m entering the workforce. During my three years of study, the University has been really helpful in assisting me to organise my work placement. I have already completed some work experience with the Department of Primary Industries and with Elders, a leading Australian agribusiness.
The University’s Department of Agricultural Sciences is really enjoyable to be a part of – everyone is easy to get along with and we are well known for our social events. It’s a great place to meet people interested in the same thing as you, in a great atmosphere, and I love that everyone is so friendly and helpful around campus.
Agriculture is such a major industry in Australia, and internationally – I’ve heard there is a demand for 2000 more agriculture graduates in Australia each year to fill available jobs. I feel confident La Trobe can provide me with the knowledge and expertise needed for success in whichever career I choose.
