Course of study:
PhD in Molecular Pathology

Listen to an interview with Alicia on ABC Radio National's Science Show.

I’m completing my PhD in Molecular Pathology within the Botany department, working on understanding how plants and pathogens interact on a molecular level.

Although my project has a really specific focus, on the whole what I am studying will help to ensure future food supplies.

I work for the University as a Student Ambassador, which I love, as I get to tell potential students all the stuff I wish I’d known in high school!

My advice is to pick something you think you will enjoy, not something you think sounds impressive or will keep your parents happy. Read up on what is actually taught in each course, as judging your interest in a course based on the titles of subjects could leave you studying something you weren’t expecting.

As a science student, I really love the grounds and wildlife that La Trobe offers - and the ducks! La Trobe is a really friendly University, and staff and students are very approachable and laid back. I’ve had lots of fun engaging in co-curricular activities such as sport and theatre and made lots of friends – it’s not all about the study!

La Trobe offers specific courses as well as generalist degrees so if you have a pretty good idea of what you want to do you can be qualified in a specific area pretty quickly. Also, we have much more prac time in the science courses than other universities.
