Payment options

Commonwealth Supported places and fee-paying places

Postgraduate coursework programs are either fee-paying (known as an ‘Australian fee-place’) or subsidised by the Commonwealth Government (known as a ‘Commonwealth Supported Place’ or ‘CSP’).

Australian fee-places

In Australian fee-paying courses students pay the full cost of the course. See how much your course will cost.

Australian fee-paying students may be eligible to take out a government loan (FEE-HELP) to assist with paying course fees. To be eligible for FEE-HELP loans, you must be either:

  • an Australian citizen
  • the holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa*
  • the holder of an Australian permanent visa who is undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals*.

* You must also reside in Australia for the duration of your study.

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)

If you are offered a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), the Australian Government subsidises your tuition fees. Find out how much your student contribution will be at the Australian Government's Study Assist site.

If you are an Australian citizen or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa, you have the choice of three options for paying your student contribution:

  • Defer your contribution and pay it back through a HECS-HELP loan (which you pay back through tax deductions when your income reaches a certain level).
  • Pay for your course upfront at the start of each semester and receive a 20 per cent discount.
  • Pay some of your course upfront and take a HECS-HELP loan for the remainder. Payments you make over $500 will receive a 20 per cent discount.

For more information on HECS/HELP loans, visit the Australian Government website studyassist.

Tax benefits

If there is a direct connection between your postgraduate course and your current job, you may be entitled to an income tax deduction for tuition fees and related expenses. Contact the Australian Taxation Office for more information.
