Politics and International Relations Program

Undergraduate Studies

How can I study Politics and International Relations?

Politics is currently available to students at Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Melbourne (Bundoora) and Mildura campuses.

Politics and International Relations subjects are available to students enrolled in any Faculty. The number of units that may be taken depends on the rules of the degree for which a student is enrolled.

In general, students who wish to enrol in a second or third year subject need to complete 30 credit points of Politics and International Relations units at first year level. If they have not done so, they can enrol subject to the approval of the Unit Coordinator.

The Bachelor of International Relations degree (available only at Bundoora campus) is administered and coordinated by the program (current POL3PCW students click here).
The degree is a widely respected inter-disciplinary program which provides an intellectually demanding course of study of the economic, legal, political and strategic features of the contemporary international system. It provides students with appropriate university preparation for careers in government, business, media, non-governmental organizations and international organizations. As a core component of the course, students spend a semester in a professional placement. This provides an unparalleled opportunity to develop professional networks, utilize their skills and to advance their career prospects.

Students who wish to satisfy the degree requirements by taking a major in politics must take 130 credit points of politics, of which at least 60 credit points must be at third-year level. Potential honours students must include POL3POK Politics of Knowledge and/or POL3HON Politics of the Twentieth Century and must have passed 130 credit points of politics or other appropriate units. Potential honours students are also strongly encouraged to take POL2HMP/POL3HMP History of Modern Political Thought.

For more information on the degree or for student perspectives on why this degree is a great choice, you can also contact our active La Trobe International Relations Association (LIRA) by visiting their website at www.lira.org.au

All units are offered subject to the availability of appropriate staffing and minimum enrolments.

The above information applies only to the Melbourne (Bundoora) Politics Program. For more information on Politics units please see below:
