La Trobe offers an outstanding environment for you to undertake a postgraduate degree. The Program offers a range of postgraduate courses including taught coursework Masters, Masters by research and Doctor of Philosophy. Students have access to shared office space, computer facilities, attentive supervision, and access to research funds. The Program also offers several active research seminar groups (e.g., International Relations, Social Theory; South Asian Studies, Research Skills Seminars). The Program is home to a vibrant and diverse peer community. Some study on campus. Others, working full or part time, choose to work at home. Whatever your needs, the Program is attentive to the requirements of both young graduates and those who have chosen to come back to study. The Program is also home to the Politics Society, a student run association that hosts regular public meetings, linking the University with outside events and speakers.

If you choose to come to La Trobe, you will be joining a dedicated and distinguished group of students. In the last few years, we have been joined by journalists from India and Norway, an award winning social scientist from Thailand, the Director of a Human Rights institute from Canada, and many talented locals. On completion, our students have gone on to secure successful careers in their chosen field including Research Fellowships, Lectureships around the world and various positions in the private and public sector. Against competitive international candidates, recently completed PhD students have secured recent appointments at University of New South Wales, Deakin University, Monash University, and Griffith University.

Study Options

Master of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy by research
These degrees are offered by research only, and may be completed either full-time or part-time. Masters students normally take 2 years full-time or 3-4 years part-time to complete the degree. Doctoral candidates must be enrolled for at least 2.5 years full-time, or 3-7 years part-time.

Masters Preliminary by coursework and minor thesis
This course, which is equivalent to an Honours year, can be completed in one year full time or two years part time. Students are required to complete two units of coursework, and a minor thesis (approximately 15,000 words). For details of available units, please see the Politics and International Relations Honours section.

Graduate Diploma in Humanities
This course is available to graduates in any discipline, and can be completed over 1-3 years. Students must complete six semester-length units at 2nd and 3rd year level. Students who do not have a suitable prerequisite for 2nd year subjects will need to complete a first year level unit, and will therefore need to enroll part time to begin with.

Master of International Relations
La Trobe University's innovative new Master of International Relations and the Master of International Relations with Honours has been developed to harness the cross-disciplinary teaching excellence of academics and practitioners from across the university. The degree equips graduates with the insights and professional skills critical for a career in international government, business, media or civil society organisations. It is taught by some of Australia’s leading scholars and provides an academically rigorous programme with a distinct policy edge.

For more information, see the Master of International Relations website, or contact Associate Professor Nick Bisley.
