Department of Podiatry - Vascular Assessment

History of vascular surgery

Whilst previous surgery should be covered in the general medical history, the importance of revising this when undertaking the vascular assessment will assist both the patient’s memory of the purpose of the procedure, whilst confirming in the clinician's mind why certain procedures had been performed.

It is important to cover all areas of the vascular system, from open heart and bypass surgery to varicose vein removal. History of previous surgery may give the podiatrist useful information regarding previous insufficiencies that are unable to be elicited from the patient (Nelson, 1992).

Determining the success and recovery of recent surgery can be a useful guide for prognosis regarding podiatric procedures such as partial nail avulsions or caustic wart treatments.
