Lecturer: George Murley

The skin:
-Largest organ of the body
-Avg. surface area of 1.8m2
-Makes up about 16% of body weight
-Referred to as the ‘integument' or the ‘integumentary system'

Skin differs in thickness - is thicker in areas of chronic friction

Functions of the Skin

Protection

Sensation

Thermoregulation

Immune system

Metabolism

Considered to be three layers:

Epidermis,
dermis and
subcutaneous or subcutis (not always regarded as part of the skin)

Epidermis is outermost layer and is composed of cellular elements called keratinocytes

EPIDERMIS:

Stratum germinativum (basale) - sits on a basement membrane

Stratum spinosum (prickle layer)

Stratum granulosum (granular layer)

Stratum corneum (horney layer)

Stratum lucidum - palms/soles?

OTHER CELLS OF EPIDERMIS:

NON-KERATINOCYTES:

Melanocytes

Langerhan's cells

Merkel cells

DERMIS:

Dermis divided into 2 regions:

papillary dermis

reticular dermis

Based largely on differences in size and density of collagen fiber bundles

CELLS OF DERMIS:

Fibroblasts:

Macrophages:

Mast cells:

Lymphocytes:
