builds on the first year subjects of HBS11APH (Human Anatomy and
Physiology) and HBS12HBF (Human Body Function) and the second year
subjects of HBS21NEU (Neurosciences) and HBS22PPY (Pathology and
Pharmacology).
The
content covered in this subject are:
Diabetes
mellitus
Rheumatology
Neurology
Peripheral vascular disease
Wound management
The
learning objectives of this subject that students are expected to
demonstrate are:
1) A detailed understanding of the aetiology, pathophysiology and
medical management of the common endocrine, vascular, neurological
and rheumatological disorders that are seen in podiatric patients
2) A detailed understanding of how the common endocrine, vascular,
neurological and rheumatological disorders affect the lower limb
and their podiatric management, including wound management
3) An awareness of the less common medical disorders that affect
the lower limb or affect podiatric management.
Lectures:
Tuesdays 9.00AM-12.00AM in HS2-224
Fridays 2.00PM-4.00PM in HS2-222
Teaching
approach:
A variety of approaches to learning are used. Core content will
be outlined in the lectures with most of the content for Diabetes,
Neurology and Rheumatology available as 3 manuals from the bookshop.
The content for vascular disease and wound management will be advised
by the lecturer. Class time will be spent on a number of activities
that encourage interaction with the written content. Additional
books and journal article are held by the library and will need
to be referred to for written assignments.
Assessment:
1) Examination (100%)
There will be a 2 hour examination during the University examination
period. The exam will be marked out of 120 marks (120 marks = 120
minutes, i.e. 1minute = 1 mark). The exam will consist of 4 sections
(Neurology, Rheumatology, Vascular/wound, Diabetes). Each section
is compulsory. Each section is worth 30 marks (i.e. 30 minutes on
each section). Each section will have 3 questions. Each question
is worth 15 marks. Only 2 of the 3 questions are required to be
answered.
2)
Hurdle requirement:
Completeion of the self assessment exercises for the diabetes, vascular
and neurology on WebCT (details will be given)
