Pitted Keratolysis

 

 

Superficial infection caused by Corynebacterium bacteria

 

 


 

Clinical presentation

 

• Small round pits or erosions of stratum corneum

 

• Hyperhidrosis greatly enhances growth of these MO’s

 

• Predominantly on weight-bearing areas

 

• Heels, forefeet and toe pads

 

• Accompanied by hyperhidrosis and bromidrosis

 

• No erythema present

 

• No inflammation present

 

• Severe cases can experience burning

 

 

 

 


 

Pathophysiology

• Proteolytic enzymes which erode horny layer of skin

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

Diagnosis

• Made on clinical presentation Pt. history

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Treatment

 

• Treatment selection depends on the severity

 

 

• Attention to hygiene very important

           o Treat hyperhidrosis & bromidrosis

           o Footbaths with astringent

           o Antiperspirants spray

           o Absorbent powders

 

 

 


• If mild to severe:

           o Topical antibiotics
    

 

            o Deodoriser
