6.12 ADDUCTOR HALLUCIS AND FLEXOR HALLUCIS BREVIS
Figure 15. Pain pattern referred from TrPs at commonly observed locations in adductor hallucis and flexor hallucis brevis (Travell & Simons, 1992).
Symptoms Patients may complain of pain in the forefoot when walking as well as numbness and a feeling of fullness in the area.
Trigger Point Examination
To examine adductor hallucis, stretch and gently abduct the first metatarsophalangeal joint.
TrP tenderness is usually palpatable although taut bands are not.
To examine flexor hallucis brevis, palpate along the medial border of the foot, to avoid the thick plantar fascia.
It is important not to mistake the tendon of abductor hallucis for a taut band.
Associated Trigger Points
Usually, several deep intrinsic muscles are involved simultaneously.
