6.12 ADDUCTOR HALLUCIS AND FLEXOR HALLUCIS BREVIS

Figure 15. Pain pattern referred from TrPs at commonly observed locations in adductor hallucis and flexor hallucis brevis (Travell & Simons, 1992).

Symptoms

• Patients may complain of pain in the forefoot when walking as well as numbness and a feeling of fullness in the area.

Trigger Point Examination

• To examine adductor hallucis, stretch and gently abduct the first metatarsophalangeal joint.

• TrP tenderness is usually palpatable although taut bands are not.

• To examine flexor hallucis brevis, palpate along the medial border of the foot, to avoid the thick plantar fascia.

• It is important not to mistake the tendon of abductor hallucis for a taut band.

Associated Trigger Points

• Usually, several deep intrinsic muscles are involved simultaneously.
